Average cost to paint GT2-style wing

I have my GT2-style wing (including the deck lid) at the bodyshop, ready for Guards Red paint. I was quoted $1,800 for the work (it's a fiberglass piece I believe). I was told because it's fiberglass, they perform about 3 steps of preparation, painting, baking, etc., until the finish is as good as the stock finish. Not sure if this is just b.s. or not.

Although I did not have a $ figure in mind, $1,800 just seems a little high to paint that thing. I know I paid quite a bit for the interior painted pieces I have, but even extrapolating from those pieces, I'm not getting $1,800.

Does anyone have any data/experience on how much something like this should cost to paint? I'd like to switch bodyships (quickly) if I'm getting ripped off.

I don't know how that works in the states but that is def. B.S. if someone quoted me that here in Kuwait i would look them in the face and say "i better get the thing gold plated for that"

try other paint shops, remember it's not rocket science to get a paint job perfect.

That's my take but again, like i said. i dont know how it works in the states.

Labor, labor, labor. Shops hear fiberglass and they just assume lots of labor. Try taking it to a shop that specializes in corvettes or similiar.....might get a better quote since they are used to dealing with fiberglass all the time.

Ive found about $500 a panel for a decent job on paint ready parts. Can easily go up from there with prep etc.

$1800 is too much IMO. Should be less than $1000.

Sigh. It's a real pain in the azz trying to find someone that won't screw you. To date I've been very happy with:

Sewickley Car Store
A.W.E. Tuning
Rennsport-1
Sharkwerks
Suncoast Porsche
Bumperplugs
Champion Motorsports

Don't even ask how many other vendors I've spoken to, but declined because of bad business. I've only been public with one (that really deserved it).

Hmmm...rating system for vendors anyone...kind of like the iPhone app rating system? Might be a good idea.

Great idea ^^^

I have a bodyshop in NYC and theres two prices, clean fiberglass not much prep work i would charge $400 without install, if the fiberglass is cheap and has lots of prep work i would charge $800 without install. Hope this helps, and FYI I've done many Pcars so my pricing is spot on. DO NOT PAY ANYTHING NEAR THAT $1800 PRICE

Thanks friend...great info!

I've pulled my car and wing from the bodyshop. It's now back at my dealer. I'm in process of finding another bodyshop that doesn't rip (even steal) money from customers. Seems as if up to $800-$900 depending on quality of part is where I'll be. As I've mentioned to other vendors, I'm not all about going after the lowest cost provider. I will pay a premium for high quality work and service.

Have you tried Greater Pittsburgh Collision? I have used them for 25 years. Expensive but quality of work second to none in this area. Just got an M3 back from them. Son hydroplaned into guardrail. Over 30,000.00 damage and car is PERFECT. http://www.greaterpitt.com/

Sorry ~ the wreck, presume son is OK.

LOL only because that's the place that tried to charge me 2-3 x what I've been told it would cost (even for a high-quality job).

Thanks for you concern - son is fine other than having a pi**ed off father. I assumed that is where the car was. Most of my experiences with them were insurance related so there was an adjuster involved. The few times I actually paid, I also thought it was a little high but never really looked into it as I knew the quality of their work. Certainly will check closer in the future.

Your job is much more extensive and is STILL cheaper than what TaylorColeman was quoted. Look up at his first post. $1400 is a nice price for 2 side skirts and a wing

Update: I found a reputable shop charging me $580. Should be done by this Friday. I'll post pics when it's home.
