Engine compartment Fan.

Engine compartment fan light came on dash warning. Dealer changed the 5volt relay fuse as it was blown. Problem fixed for two days when the dash light came on again. Called dealer spoke with tech and he said we should up the fuse to a 10 volt. Fan was replace with a new fan. Any one else had this issue??

Mine didn't work from the get go. Took delivery of the car in July. Didn't get a warning light, but when the ambient temperature got up to 85 I thought something was wrong. Took it to the dealer and they fixed immediately with a new fan. Even now I rarely hear it, since we never have much hot weather around here.

Upping the fuse, unless authorized by a Porsche service bulletin would seem questionable. The fan is exposed to a very bad environment so I would think it might be on its' last legs. I'd ask that it be replaced while you're still under warranty.

I agree we you, but he is a factory Porsche Tech. I just want the fan to work. If you drive your car hard the fan should kick on after the car is turned off to draw the hot air out of the engine compartment. It really not that hot here now. Also some times at Ideal the fan will kick on. Oil temp is around 200.

I would also want to know what is causing the fuse to blow and correct the root cause. Upping the fuse may lead to shorting something far more important than the fuse itself.

I've seen too many mistakes committed by "factory Porsche Techs" to just simply endorse their actions.

There are a few Protomotive tuned engines running around that have a custom Y pipe, which requires removal of the engine fan. There do not appear to be deleterious effects by removing the fan even in high temperatures. If your car is out of warranty and you do not want to pay to have the fan replaced or repaired, you can flash the ECU to remove the engine bay temperature sensor trigger and live without a fan.

Also, if the dealer is telling you 5 volt fuse vs. 5 AMP fuse, I suggest getting a second opinion.

When from a 5 amp to a 7.5 amp fuse. So far not issue. If it blows again they will change the relay as well. My guess is that the relay could be bad. For now the car is running great and the engine compartment fan is working fine. I find it interesting some guys just run with no fan at all. If you track the car and take cool down laps after session is over, I wounder if the engine compartment cools fast when parked with the bootlid down and fan on or bootlid opean so more air can get to the motor?

Same problem here couple of years ago....had fan replaced first time....then second time they replaced the fan relay and have never had problem again. Fan comes on quite often in Florida....and runs for about 10 minutes after shut down.

Thanks for your reply. I think the relay is the nexted logical step if the problem comes back.

Where is the engine compartment fan fuse located? It's not in the main fuse box up front by my left foot. The diagram I saw says that it's in the "Fuses Support - Rear". Can't find where this is located though.

Anyone?
