I thought manual transmission cars were immune from unintended acceleration since most cars today require having engaged the clutch pedal before starting can occur.

If the car was not worth 180K, there would be no super big issue. Kids are kids they make mistakes. I think saying the car was "trashed" is kind of an overstatement. I feel for the kid, he is going to take heat for this for forever, when really he should of never been given the keys in the first place if you cannot afford the damage.

I think it should be on the journalist for not taking care of his charge, not the poor kid.
