997.1 vs SL65 (real world)

Since I already have two tickets (got them in the tahoe) I am very selective when it comes to giving in to a street showdowns and it really has to be a worthy opponent. I'm sure most agree if one is going to let loose it had better be a worth while adversary. All though with the heavily modded cars some may be hard to spot. Back in the day one of my closest races was a WRX who had god knows how many mods and after the race admitted he was also using Nos. I got him by a 1/2 car length and that was back in my Gemballa 550.

This past weekend I was coming back from the gym and after I truned off the fwy I noticed a black AMG SL jockeying for position to get up along the side of me. I could see it was new from the newer side grills but not until he finally got his way next to me and we stopped at the light did I see it was a SL65. Since I had an 06 SL65 for 2 years I knew they were practically impossible to launch but once they got going they really did pull well. I figured I'd be nice and let the guy get rolling before I got on it as he was doing his typical neutral revs as we were waiting for the light. I was in sport mode but kept the PSM on since I really didn't have to worry about launching. When the light turned green the SL spun the tires as expected but not nearly as much as thought he would. I easily just kept with him until 2nd gear as I saw he was off and running and then I hit it. I have to say after that I was pulling away from the SL at an amazing rate and finally let up when it was over 10 car lengths. It was so bad I though he possibly let up or made a mistake using the "manual" option but we repeated the run (he must have thought something was wrong s well) at the next stretch this time from a rolling start with the same result. I'm sure at higher speeds the TT V12 would have closed some of the gap but these 997TTs are true performers. Of course I have stage 1 mods on 93 octane but even I was impressed.

I think many of us get acclimated to the performance of our P cars and sometimes forget what performers these cars really are.

If he had the same mods as you it would have been quite different, I have a fairly modded CL600 and make a bit more HP and TQ then an SL65 with just a tune. I have raced a member here with your same mods on a 997tt band I had him by one car length from a 30-120 roll...also raced one with Proto set up and modified VTG's and he walked me easily. The 997tt's are no joke for sure!! Im looking to get into a 996tt myself in a few months

True, and I loved the drivability of my 65 but launching it was very frustrating which is another reason the 997 is just an all around bad boy. Let's be honest most cars need rolling starts to even try to keep up.

I agree 100%, I have 750rwtq and launching from a stop is useless, even from a 50 roll I spin. The 997tt really shines from a roll

750rwtq??? wow. You could almost turn the earth with that much torque!

I had the car for a couple of weeks when I was coming home on (name withheld!) highway and this C63AMG Benz was riding my butt and egging me on. I almost never play this game but hey I just got the car. We were rolling at around 140km/h and I was in 6th in non-sport mode when we both hit it. I guess I was a little overconfident in the ability of the car in 6th gear b/c I didn't pull away much but did still stay ahead up till 230 or so when I exited. Still an impressive result but it made me realize what an adversary a sedan can be! My car was completely stock at that time.

C63s are the lighter of the AMG cars but the 55 kompressor AMGs can really be fierce with a simple pulley and ECU upgrade. I had that done to my old CLS55 and it was a fun car.

I have a RennTech S600 with 620hp/740tq and the TCU (faster shift) upgrade so it's very similar to AMG numbers. The best way to launch from stand-still is to put it in comfort mode. It just slips the converter without setting off traction control (braking). Once you're really moving put it back in S(tandard).

Interesting, yes I was experimenting for the entire 18 months I had it trying to find the perfect launch method. This was the main reason I never modded my 65.

It was a fresh 2010, dealer plates and all. He could have had his traction control on too and this would have retarded his power even from a rolling start. That was a problem in my 65 and I always had to take it off. The torque on those are insane.

very very true. i've been thinking about this one for several months and can't come up with one car that would be an "upgrade" from my current turbo (in the same $ range). probably wait a couple of years and see how the pdk turns out or a gt2 (if i can handle the 2)...
