Newbie question: 997.1 vs. 997.2

I thought I saw a reference to 997.1 TT here. So I am assuming that there is a 997.2. When was 997.2 introduced and what differences are there between the 997.1 and 997.2?

You're posting on the Turbo forum so I am assuming you are inquiring specifically about the Turbo.

997.1 was introduced in 2007 and lasted until 2009.
It is a 3.6 liter non DFI engined car.
In automatic trim it uses a Tiptronic gearbox.

The 997.2 was introduced in 2010.
It is a 3.8 liter DFI engined car.
In automatic trim, it uses a double-clutch gearbox called PDK.

Engine oil system changed between the two models.

The 997.2 can also now be optioned with dynamic engine mounts and Porsche torque vectoring, two options previously unavailable to the 997.1 that aid in handling and stability.

The 997.2 can be had with paddle shifts (optional) instead of buttons (only option for 997.1) on the steering wheel for manual shifting in case the car is an auto.

Suspension setup for the .2 is in my opinion far better than the .1.

Aesthetically, differences consist mainly of LED taillights, Daytime running lights and new wheel options.

I think that about covers the main changes.

Hope this was helpful.

A lot of people greatly favor the .1 strictly for the race proven dry sump engine. Of course I still remember the uproar when Porsche went from air to water cooled.

OT: To most it's strange enough they still have the engine hanging out back. Just imagine how odd they might be today if they were still air cooled! LOL

The dry sump engine has proven reliability and actually costs more to make. The separate tanks assure proper oil delivery in hard cornering and prior to the 996 and 997 all Porsche 993's (as well as those before it) had it. Then it became exclusive to the Turbo and Gt3 until now. the gt3 and gt3 RS still have it but it does not have PDK as it may require the integrated system (cooling) .

The dry sump engine is a Porsche benchmark but in the 997 Turbo the Gt1 street version was derived from the Gt1 cars (1996 ?)and was first found in the 996 Turbo (model year 2001) which BTW to this day still has reliability and an amazing platform to modify (despite the mediocre interior and structure) .

In fact a modded 996tt may not look as pretty but modified will beat 997.2tt (stock) and the driver will have about 100K in his pocket saved but he also will drive home from the track in an aging car with a lot less luxury.

The 997.1tt also offers the Gt1 platform and there's plenty of videos on youtube which display how fast they can be .

The new car is very nice and it has been well received as the PDK mated to the Turbo offers incredible boost retention but it will take time to determine how much it can hold modifications and how well this Dfi engine will operate over time. One thing for sure though -- as a street luxury power car .. the 997.2 tt is very impressive and unlike the cars before it it's very beefed up .. stock!!!!
