Test drove 2011 ttS and 08 tt 6 spd back to back

Really a great experience in search of a new ride. Myfirst thought with the sales guy initially at the wheel of the turbo S, I wished I had not eaten so much fettucini with chicken at lunch as I thought I was going to toss it up on the inside of the windshield! That car is simply unbelievable, I am sure the fastest thing out there save for a Veyron. The downshifts in the sport mode were breathtaking/neck snapping. The car had a power and stickiness to the road that was amazing. 110-120 mph seems to arrive in seconds. The only thing that bugged me a little after yrs of driving 6 speeds was him saying to the effect 'the best thing you can do is leave it in automatic and shift with you right foot on the throttle. The transmission will do everything else'. It really does make the shift paddles superfluous and silly when you try and overide it yourself. I do have a great respect for this car. The next drive was a used 08 tt 6speed which seemed in a way more natural for me as an extension/improvement on my current 05 C2S. I did not feel at all the heaviness or awd that I was worried about, and turbo lag seems almost non existent in these. I think a tt 6speed is the ride for me, but I'm going to sleep on it.

Thanks for the review. I presume the 6speed felt pretty slow compare to the S

Good luck with your search/decision. You can't seem to go wrong regardless.

With the money you save on the '08 you can easily get it up to speed!

Actually they both felt very fast compared to my car a 2005 C2S. The ttS with the PDK did feel significantly faster, actually it felt like it was on a different level from any P experience you can imagine. Almost a little disconnected-all you do is point the wheel, work the gas pedal AND HANG ON!

I don't think for me, but I can certainly understand why people like it and why manual transmissions are becoming archaic in comparison.

I see a great deal of discussion re the PDK and TT S. Am curious about the regular TT that can be had with the 6 speed. How does that drive and feel in comparison to the PDK? Is there too much power to effectively use via the 6 speed thus causing more buyers shift into the TT S?

Hi Bill. I did not think there was too much power for a 6 speed. Remember many of the P supercars still are 6 speed. It just felt like a more powerful extension of mine. One thing the sales guy who I think is very knowledgeable said is that first gear 'disappears' so quickly that it is hard to shift in time with the manual. I did not appreciate this though, maybe because I am so use to mine.

1st gear is the only thing I hate about the 6sp: you have to shift so damn quick. Not really fond of 2nd either but you get to enjoy it a bit longer than 1st.

Perhaps,but 3rd is so sweet
I used to love and casually cruise around in 4th with my more timid passengers, and when the opportunity safely arose,I would quickly flick the short-shifter back down into 3rd....and floor it

I would go with the S w/PDK. Don't know what all your intentions with the vehicle are but you're not loosing anything from a performance standpoint, and there is something to be said for the ease of not having to shift all the time. Hold on and blast off...that's all you need.

Sweet, indeed. 3rd, 4th, and even 5th are great.
