You can spend $25K on modifications of a 997.1 turbo, and it will be much faster than the new Turbo S. I don't know where folks are getting their information, but applications like TPC's Blitzkrieg plus some minor suspension modifications will make the car much faster than the S.

$80K for a used 2007 Turbo plus $25K in mods adds up to $105K, not $170K for a Turbo S. However, you won't recover the cost of mods at trade-in. You have to restore it to original condition. However, there is a market for used aftermarket parts.

Echoing what others have said on this forum, Porsche is now going to release the 991 and other cars at a much faster pace due to the command of VW. I believe that the new 991 turbo will be faster than the 997.2 Turbo S. You will recover probably around $90K on trade-in for the new Turbo (reflecting auction prices). So, in 2 years you will lose $70-80K on the car if you trade it in, IMHO.

OK so the PDK will shift fast --but it can't hold the power of a stage 3 clutch nor can it mate with 700+ HP --yet!!!

In fact --many of the cars on that list are in fact 996 Turbos (modded) . The tuners had years to perfect that car and with time they figured out how to get the most out of that engine even before the 997tt was produced.

I am not saying that they can't or won't figure out the 997.2tt but this takes time and in the meantime the original poster's 997.1tt can beat the new car with the right mods. In fact it will cream the new car with 100K worth of mods.

In terms of every other feature --the interior is the same on both cars. The aesthetics are similar . The suspension can be upgraded to improve either . In short the cars are not so much different that it justifies him spending this much to get a potentially slower car with similar features.
I think you mean that the 997.1 has the potential to be faster than the 997.2 with the right mods. It just takes quite a bit to do it depending on the model that you want to eclipse. If you want to beat a 997.2 6 speed car you need to hit 11 flat. I had a 997.1 TT Tip with EVO headers, exhaust, cats and tune. I could never make that number.

Your point is well taken..

At the end of the day you can never get past the fact that there is always a cheaper way to go faster and there is always a new model just around the corner.

This is a very basic setup andf may not take the 997.2tt S .

I did my Turbo in many stages but I noticed the largest power upgrade came with the modified Turbos . If you look at the times on that chart look at the huge difference in trap speed . The modified Turbos simply do not taper off. Plus the acceleration is more linear and seamless than with the original (unmodified) Turbos.
They charge right up to the shift and hurl the car into the next gear . I can't shift as efficiently as PDK and I think most humans can't beat the technology --but their ego stands in the way of admitting it. But what the driver lacks in shifting speed the higher Hp car can make up for in power . The PDK car just can't be brought to those Hp levels yet .

There is another price issue to consider beyond the performance for the Op.
His 997.1tt has already taken the bulk of its depreciation . If he takes a loss on his car to buy the new car it will depreciate the most in its first two years --just in time for the 991 .

One can simply spend money frivously and end up with nothing to show for it .
Adding up the loss on his first car to that of the new car can pay for most of the next car .

Do you want a factory 10 sec car with the latest technology and a warranty or an older model that's been modified to keep up at a lower price?

If you add 25K in mods to a 07 with 25K on it and drive it for 2 more years it's value will drop to under 50K. They won't give anything for the mods at trade in time and you may have a harder time selling the car. Realistically your going to loose at least 40K or more. Plus if your unlucky and anything happens to the car it's probably not going to be covered by a warranty.

If you figure round numbers that a new car is 170 and the trade value of the old one is 70 it's going to cost 100K to upgrade. In 2 years the value of the S will still be at least 110+.

Will it cost more for the S, you bet. But you also get a list of items that you can't get on the 997.1 and the car will still be under full warranty till 2014.

Funny folks are saying if he can afford the depreciation hit, then why is he worrying about getting the best deal possible. The reality is he is probably able to afford the depreciation hit because he is hardwired to get the best deal possible and to want the best for himself.

Simple equation, if the desire have the best and to recoup the depreciation hit results in recouping the loss by working harder for the next one, then you win (provided nothing else of higher priority - e.g. family, wine, retirement - is sacrificed along the way). Buy the car, work harder, enjoy it.

wow

that's a great deal on your trade-in. really. can see why they're not showing a lot of flex on the px of S. would say -10k sounds more than reasonable and seals it. not hearing of better discounts in ny tri-state area.

I agree. While moding is fun it can be filled with frustration as not everything works as expected and often leads to more mods; and lost time.

People often forget what their time is worth. Divide what you make by the hours you work in a year and I bet that making the change may be your least expensive option.
