+1... I've had 3 E55s that I've driven in snow on snow tires and they gave me absolutely no problems. The lack of torque with the E63 will make it even easier to drive in slippery conditions.

We can have up to 6 months of snow and the rest is rain , get plenty of practice.

I drove in this a few days ago:

The E55 is easy and safe to drive in the snow, BUT you get stuck in even low uphills and I even got stuck in loose sand in the summer! Had to reverse uphill home...Embarassing.

Mertin is infamous around these parts
The limited ground clearance thing blows my mind when contemplating snow driving in the Turbo. Have you looked under your car lately? There's no room under there! You might be okay on main streets but parking lots and side streets might have deep snow/ice could "ground" the car.

I drove my 996 C4 as a daily driver through 3 Boston winters. My 996 Turbo is driven daily in the snow too. Awesome snow cars.

The only issue I've run into with ground clearance was in the Northeast with the big ice chunks that fall off of trucks. I lost a few of the plastic aero panels under the car, but they were cheap and easy to replace.

Looks like you have plenty of advice about winter options...to another point... I would sell this feature (4wd/good-better in the snow...) to your wife simply to convert to a 997 turbo. The amount of fun you'll have on the non-snow days will far outwiegh the slower winter ones.

totally agree..... your whole lip will be messed up, i know a lot of people may disagree with you driving in the snow, but hey each to his own, some people have that luxury to have 2-4 cars or trucks to choose from, and others dont, me personally would drive my 997tt during the winter but not in snow, but it must be fun to do like in the video above, anyone knows where that video was taken.......?

We got about 2 feet (60cm) of snow over the last week in Minnesota. I drove mine to work today and it's excellent on plowed streets with some snow on them. I have Michelin snow tires on it and cannot recommend them enough. The car drives like it's got claws.

I personally never driven a Porsche in the snow, but I know at least with the 996tt they took many test cars to one of the poles and drove them in extreme snow and ice conditions. I'm sure they did the same with the 997tt. The Turbo is the most practical compared to any other car with the same performance (supercars mostly) and I know people who drive their AWD 911's all year round and drive them in the snow like any other day.
Although not the same at all, I did drive an Audi A8 quattro a lot in winter in the snow and it's amazing. Porsche has different system but they took a lot of AWD technology from their Audi partnership and evolved it.

By the way I know what you mean about your AMG, my dad had a S55 AMG for a while and it was a death wish in the Canadian winter.

Thanks for the great feedback! I need all the ammo I can get to justify the purchase. We'll see...

I get stuck on hills with the e63 with just a little bit of snow. Seattle has a fair amount of hills (not like San Fran though), so it just sucks.

Remember that it is also better on rainy days....

I drove a 996C2 with snow tires on 17" wheels through 3 winters.
My main comment is with winter shoes, jacket and gloves on the fun factor becomes low, so whats the point?
The other issue is the car is low and an SUV with iced up windows is not likely to notice you're already in the lane that they're headed for.
If you ever get on truly glare ice, the rear engine becomes that pendulum which you don't notice when there is even the smallest traction available.
Let me tell you THAT is an experience you don't want.

"Practical"?

Does anybody else find it humorous to use the word 'practical' and 911TT in the same sentence?

Anyway, hardtop, snowtires... ready to go here in NY!
