997TT - Practical In The Snow?
Up here in MN they both salt and sand the roads in the winter...
Which is great, if you want to have the sand blasted look on the front, and behind the wheels, of your TT, and you don't mind cleaning sand, with a salt chaser, out of every orifice of your car.
I park the TT and RS4 in the winter, and pull out the Q7 and Tacoma (for really big winter dumps) for winter fun.

I live in the Seattle area as well. To be honest, don't even consider snow as an issue when making your purchase. Don't even bother getting winter tires, IMHO. Snow stays on the ground maybe a total of 14 days each winter. You can ride the bus during that time or ride share with your wife in the truck. All other times you just have to deal with the rain - which the Turbo handles very well.
I have both a 997TT and a CTT so I just grab the Cayenne if the snow stays put. It handles the snow very well even with my Toyo Proxy S/T tires (all-seasons more geared toward summer performance than winter driving). I also grew up in Northern Michigan so I tend to fair better than most out here when the weather turns nasty.

Pirelli Sottozeros on the E63 and you'll be able to drive rings around most pick-up drivers in the snow. The Sottozero is a 'high performance' winter tyre, and whilst that sounds like an oxymoron, they do retain a fair degree of dry weather performance. Just don't expect them to hold the road in warm weather like the OEM summer tyres.
I drove both my '97 993 C2S and my '02 TT in the winter with snow tyres on them. Yes it can be done, but anything over 3-4 inches of snow and the front spoiler will act as a snow plow and cause you major problems. Plus the snow/ice will get impacted within the wheels which can cause major imbalance issues until it thaws out or you knock it out.
Bottom line imho: like others have mentioned; it can be done, but why?
