997.1TT VALVE exhaust options please!

Hi guys,

New to the forums after recently acquiring a beautiful basalt black 997.1TT tiptronic that was babied in its former life. What a beast! I came from a Boxster S.... big difference! Anyway, on my way to purchasing this car I had a chance to drive a 6 speed version and noticed it was a lot more "raw" in a good kind of way... the tip feels a bit too smooth and refined by comparison... my porsche dealer explained that the torque converter takes some of the engine vibrations and noise out of the chassis making it more refined... so my solution is to purchase an aftermarket exhaust...

So from day 1 I have been scouring these and other forums trying to ascertain which exhaust might suit me... after pouring over every youtube clip I learned that there was no point anyway..... I know Europipe is a very good system and unless I get some answers to my questions below I will go with an EP1 most likely...

Anyway, I had an opportunity to see a techart stage 1 modified car prior to purchasing mine... one of the features was a valved exhaust that was controlled by the Sport Chrono button (which seems to be virtually standard on australian cars)... I like this concept because I can sneak out of home in the middle of the night when I'm called out by work without upsetting my neighbours, and when I get out on the highway I can bypass the exhausts and go nuts!

Unfortunately these systems seem few and far between and not very popular judging by how hard it is to get info on them... the brands I've found are Techart, FVD, Innotech, Agency Power, Kriessieg, Capristo... also I've read a few clues on these forums that the valves "fail" after some time.... is this why they are not discussed here? Is it the cost?? I've read the pneumatic valves are more robust than their electronic counterparts... which exhaust use which?

Does anyone have any experience with these exhausts? Is my goal of a Sport Chrono controlled exhaust just a pipe dream?? And do the hard wired options all have an extra ugly switch installed somewhere?

I would love to hear from anyone that has any direct experience with this style of exhaust system or from anyone that can point me to previous (useful) threads dealing with this topic....

My overall goal is to have a Jekyll & Hyde type of exhaust note with some improvement in performance... for the record my favourite exhaust note appears in this clip... I'm aware it's not a realistically achievable goal but I still love it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDCocMU9T5M

Many thanks to you all for contributing to such a great forum and I await your collective wisdom,

drvik

Welcome to 6speed on congrats on your new toy!

We have a saying here, it never happened if there are no pix, so go out, take a few, and give us some eye candy!

Regarding your exhaust question, I think you pretty much have it pegged.
Reliability issues with the valved exhausts make them not very popular.

I understand you want the Jekyll & Hyde thing, but it is fairly doable without the valved exhaust.

This is the great thing about the Europipe exhaust sytem. On idle and part throttle at cruising speeds, the exhaust is a little bit louder than stock but far "sexier/more exotic" (for want of a better word). You floor it and the exhaust then begins to sing loud and changes character altogether.

If I were you, go for either EP1 or EP2 and don't look back.

Making a wrong exhaust selection is a costly thing!

Good luck.

EDIT -- I welcomed you to 6speed but I see your join date is 2007! LOL! You are too talkative with your keyboard!

Thanks....

I think I must have joined after I bought the Boxster and was looking for a bluetooth phone module.... went with the Mobridge in the end... works nicely, no regrets...

And, I promise.. it did happen... I just have to give her a good wash and take some nice pics!

Anyway... I was still hoping someone could chime in with their experiences... good or bad.. whats the low down on valved exhausts... have you owned one? Which one? Are you happy? Did you change it? How was the valve controlled? Did it link in to the Sport Chrono button? How was the sound with the valve open & closed? Quality of the exhaust? How much did you pay? Would you do it again?

I appreciate any info you guys can provide....

All roads lead to EP1....a bit like Rome as they say. So its just a matter of do you want to take the short route or the long and more costly route. Being the tip i would take also heed Stefs advice on the EP2. Tips will have a natural tendency to loiter around in the drone zone 1700 to 3000 unless you use the manual over ride. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, unlike a NA car, there is no good valve option. I think the heat produced/vibration is too much for the delicate moving parts.
There are very few options, currently the best is probably EP.

well i have one based on the GT2 akrapovic box, it is controlled by a separate ecu and i love it. Sportec made this for me and it has the best of both worlds. The power gain is around 30hp and torque difference is noticeable. Had some teething problems with some loose screw in one of the throttles but now works like a dream.
It is also very healthy for the VTGs not to mention the silencer box (I am running 700+ hp). It costs a lot but I absolutely love it. The trick is to have an off/ auto button that operates it when needed (ie after say 0.8 bar and beyond 3k rpm). It is a MISTAKE to have the flaps on below those 2 parametres as you lose response (and the drone sounds awful). The akrapovic box makes a fantastic sound compared to any other AM exhaust i have heard..

one more thing to add, we measured backpressure with flaps open and closed. With closed flaps and 100 cell cats the backpressure was around 200-250mb at 1.55bar boost (best AM exhausts are more like 300-350mb). With flaps open the backpressure was virtually 0 (<50mbar). That means that you can truly get 20+ hp more with a flaps system that any other AM exhaust will claim.

GT-TT: Yes, I've seen your posts before... I think what you've done is really clever... did you take photos during the build??? Do you have a exact list of parts including the valve you used and the controlled etc (links?)....

How much did the whole thing cost you??? I have considered adding a valve to the EP1.... PLEASE DON'T SHOOT ME!

Vivid: Yes, I've seen your exhaust before, but the youtube recordings are unreliable and your car is highly modified, whereas mine is stock... if you can post 'accurate' sounding clips of a stock car with your exhaust I will consider... thought I was after a fully welded unit to avoid the problem with clamps discussed all over the place... is it guaranteed drone free on a tiptronic? Feel free to PM me a price...

Cheers,

drvik

PS: I'm still keen to hear from FVD, Innotech, Techart, 9ff owners....!
