997 TT wheel questions
997 TT wheel questions
Hi all first post. Just bought an 09 997 turbo, after numerous issues I am now down to my last one. I bought a set of used HRE wheels from a forum member and just had them mounted, well the fit sucks. Forum member had them mounted on a 996 turbo which he says now had a bit of an aggressive fit. They came with stock size tries up front and 305/25/19 rears. These rims stick out almost an inch past the rear fenders and a half inch past the front.
2 questions
- can I run this tire set up without hurting the car or ruining the factory set up
- is there any way I can mod the rims to get them to fit flush with the fenders.
Any help would be great, as last Sunday I just fractured my back and ankle in a mx crash and haven't even been able to drive the car yet.

I would contact HRE direct, they are board sponsors and are great to deal with. Number one problem I see immidiately is the extra debris coming from the tires on the paint...definitely not what I'd want given that these cars already do this stock...factor in the brake dust and it really makes a mess.
If the rims themselves are well beyond the fender wall, you have an offset problem, not a tire combination problem. Each wheel design geometry is created with a specific offset for a specific vehicle. While spacers can compensate for a wider rim to move the the wheel outward from the hub, you can not modify a wheel to do the opposite.
For example, you can get a narrow body 997 wheel to fit a wide body 997 by adding a spacer to correct the offset (~17mm.) But you can not get a wide body 997 wheel to fit a narrow body 997.

Stock 996TT wheel offsets are 50mm for the front, 45mm for the rear.
Stock 997TT wheel offsets are 56mm for the front, 51mm for the rear.

Thanks Bob, I was wondering if it is possible to hone the wheel or machine the hub to fit the wheel further in. Also the diameter difference of the front to rear tires are thrown off by going to the 25 series tire vs the stock 30, is that going to cause a problem with the diff in this car.I know the 996 ran a viscous set up and I think it was changed for the 997.
Thanks

Silly question but are you sure you don't have spacers already installed on the car from the previous owner? If you do, than that would be an easy fix, remove the spacers.

Since you bought these without really knowing they would fit (correct offset, etc.), I'd suggest you talk to a wheel expert - Wheel Enhancement or Tire Rack among others - before you do anything. Also, with the AWD of the Turbo it's important to not get too far from OEM since you can cause differential problems with the wrong size tires mounted.

Well got it all figured out, spoke to hre today gave them the serial number and these were custom built for a 997 turbo by customer spec. The off set is 24mm rear and 21 front more than the factory set up. So as the seller said they are for a 997 but lied about the fact he custom ordered them with a different spec. Buyer be aware and you can never do enough due dilligence. From belonginge to numerous other forum groups and making purchases from members this is the first time I got screwed, too bad it takes the fun out of belonging to a group of like minded and interests people.
Thank you bbywu for the specs. So it looks like the 997TT offset is about 5" more than the 996TT. So in theory not interchangeable? I have an extra set of 18" 996TT hollow twists and am wondering it will fit on a 997TT? Do you know? Also, wondering if the 997TT calipers are bigger so 18" won't fit on 997TT?
Thanks!

Thanks!

Good luck!
It is not recommended to machine off material. Please call us directly and work with our Service/Refinishing department to determine if the particular wheel is safe to do that. Often times our wheels are built to specific configurations and do not allow room to machine material off the wheel. It can alter the structural integrity of the wheel.
The 315's that caused so many problems had a circumference 3.9% smaller than stock (305/30-19). Your 305/25-19's have a circumference 4.7% smaller than stock so that is even worse. You did not specify your front tire size, but assuming they are stock, you will likely have problems running the tires you have. I will not rehash the 315's thread, but it is a problem you want to avoid. I am sorry you did not get what you wanted or expected and should contact the seller to see if they will assist you.
Just a guess... the 18's will probably fit if you have steel brakes but almost certainly will not if you have PCCB's.
