I was having the known camshaft issue in my car and was thinking that if they are disassembling the engine is it that much more work to "build" the engine while they have the engine out for camshaft change? But then a weird thing happened - I was driving the **** out of the car at the track and the cel disappeared. I like this solution!
I think the motor rebuild will be a little less than $10K - the rest of the project will add another $25K - $30K including labor. Carrillo rods, 10mm head studs, gaskets, miscellaneous rebuild parts, and oil pump machining should be around $5K. My motorman charges a most reasonable $85/hr and keeps talking about 40-50 hours for the project when it's finally complete. That will likely be reasonably accurate but it's difficult to know how much of that will be attributable to the motor per se and how much is to take the car apart and install all the new parts; turbos, intercoolers, exhaust, headers, stage 3 clutch, plenums, throttle body, high energy coils, Y-pipe, upgraded turbo ducts, etc. Parts pricing definitely varies by vendor so it's worth shopping around and establishing a relationship.

A couple random thoughts now that I have lived this experience.

It makes a great deal of sense to pre-order and receive all your parts before starting a project. It is amazing how a single back ordered part or a part that needs to be swapped-out or how some confusion about who (vendor, installer, customer, etc.) is responsible for completing a specific task can stop the project in its tracks for weeks at a time. Much of this can be made to go away simply by doing some pre-planning. Obviously, if your car has a bad day and decides to blow up, you don't get to enjoy this luxury.

It is much easier to plan for this stuff when you're sitting around enjoying an adult beverage and thinking about how cool this or that mod will be than immediately after your car has taken a crap and you're upset, worried and po'd. It took me more than a couple of weeks after my incident to get my head wrapped around what I was facing before I could even think about which direction I wanted to go. Do I sell the car? Do I replace stuff with oem or upgrade? If so, with what and by whom? Do I even need to open the motor - the P-dealer I initially took the car to actually thought that was unnecessary. Who do I trust? And so on and so forth. It's even harder if you haven't been through this before.

Anyway, apologies for the ramble. Best,

I see, thanks for the info. Yeah, I don't envy you having to make a decision on the spot about what to do in this circumstance. Hope everything works out and I'm sure it will. At least if you ever want more power than what you've got then you can add it safely knowing your motor was "built".

Hi Dave. After reading the two threads i firstly congratulate you and Todd on an outstanding result and hope it all works out well in the longevity dept. And if it doesn't then se la vie. Enjoy while the goings good as they say. And on the suspension i personally wouldn't worry about that one bit.

I received some nice comments but I'm sure there are those who must think this is nuts, dyno is inflated, not possible, rods must be bent, etc...! If so, let's hear what's on your mind. Don't hold back. I won't get offended. Nothing better than a good 'ol discussion to keep things interesting. One thing you don't have to question--the motor is 100% stock. All comments welcomed, 996t guys, tuners, etc...!
I think if you keep it from rattling. it will last alot longer than people would think

Dave, the question I would ask (unless you already said and I missed it) is what is your intended use for this car? I think that will have a lot to do with longevity, issues, etc.

will you track it - road or strip? or just a street car that you will smash the pedal every now and then? I think you said you have 5K miles on it? '07? You need to drive more, man!

Thanks Paul. It's amazing what these motors can put out.

It didn't rattle going in. Hopefully, not coming out either!

It's an 08 but your point is well taken. Work keeps me pretty busy. Got to pay for all those mods I can't use--lol.

The safety issue is for real ,i have an upgraded suspension but don't have your kinda power ,but still have enough to get my self in trouble. A couple times recently ,once getting on a straight freeway on ramp i nailed it with traction control off(leave this on unless your going in a straight line) before i was going straight & did a 180 into the dirt shoulder luckily, & just last week we hit the local 1/8 mile drag strip at Irwindale with some other modded turbos .I had wheel spin in 1st & 2nd & it nearly put me in the wall until i figured out how to launch properly. So be careful out there.
