Carbon Revolution – The world’s first one piece carbon fiber wheel for automotive

Dear 6 Speed Members,

It is good to be back I am a former sponsor and member.

I wanted to introduce Carbon Revolution, the company that I have recently joined.

After years of research and development, Australian based Carbon Revolution has succeeded in solving one of the last remaining holy grails of the industry - A full one-piece carbon fiber wheel.

The entire wheel structure is molded as a single piece utilizing high end composite materials, currently built in sizes 19x8.5 (15.4lb) & 19x12 (17.9lb) and designed to mount directly on Porsche 911's. The wheels are compatible with factory tire pressure monitoring systems, accept factory center caps and come complete with all required installation hardware.

The wheels are 40% -50% lighter than premium OEM equivalents made from Aluminum. Carbon Revolution has used specialised wheel testing laboratories and testing tracks around the world to ensure that the most rigorous standards imposed by European OEMs have been tested for.

These products are high tech works of art, but then the performance advantages are the best value tuning to be bought for any vehicle. The manufacturing process is highly efficient and controllable. It has merged the rigor of aerospace processes with the efficiency and control of high volume automotive production.

Amongst the team are ex-OEM senior engineers from chassis development and drive train roles, senior manufacturing executives from world leading automotive component suppliers, R&D specialists from leading aircraft manufacturers, industrial composites manufacturing specialists and numerous PhD's with world leading materials and structures knowledge.

Carbon Revolution wheels will improve the performance of your car in many ways. Bolting on a set of lightweight CR-9 wheels is equivalent to:

· Adding horse power to the engine (increased acceleration)
· Increasing the size of the brakes (shorter stopping distances)
· Fitting stickier tires (improved grip)
· Upgrading your suspension (steering and handling improvements)
· Adding more sound insulation to the vehicle (Reduced road noise)
· Reduced vehicle mass (fuel savings)

Carbon Revolution wheels will be sold through select Specialty Tire & Wheel retailers, performance tuners and high end boutique car dealerships worldwide.

This is a remarkable and unique new technology and now there is the opportunity to experience it for yourselves.

I can be contacted directly on bill.koenig@carbonrev.com and you can read more about us at www.carbonrev.com

Thanks for the update (any pictures?). Also, can you clarify "Carbon fiber in this form is the ideal combination of strength and weight, but is also quite resistant to impact and thus will withstand potholes better than aluminum or magnesium, it will bend under extreme impact and then return to shape better than most metals. It will not shatter this is why carbon is used in formula one race car chassis and aero plane wings."

I have been under the impression that CF is very brittle and if hit at certain angles it will shatter as in the F1 suspension and other parts. I thought the tub of the F1 car did not shatter due to its thickness.

Cheers.

WOW - those are sure cool!!!
Only available in 19? or do you have 20's too?

Super interesting - only fear I would have is that they are not reparable (once damaged).

Last year I hit a pot hole, which slightly bent the lip of my 100% aluminium, light weight wheel. All the air escaped, thought it was a gonner, but my shop managed to fix it. I guess with these Carbon wheels, any accident would be terminal. Or am I mistaken?

Very nice looking wheels and really like the weight.

The last carbon fiber wheels I saw were on a R8 that my dealer said cost about $18000.

What are we looking at for these?

Also, pureporsche makes a good point.

For the first year we will send all damaged wheels back to the factory to be inspected x-rayed and CT 3d scanned this will allow us to determine if the wheel has cosmetic damage only or a 3d internal image of the carbon fiber to make sure the damage did not effect structural components. If the wheel is cosmetic we will repair and return if it is damaged from a safety standpoint then a new wheel will be purchased.

In the future it is our plan to have a repair facility here in the U.S. to conduct the inspection and repair.

Centerlock wheels are in the design phase and we will be offering them in the future.

As for pot hole damage please see the website for video where we show a 50 mph hit on an aluminum wheel with damage beyond repair and the tire would no longer hold air and then the Carbon Revolution wheel hit at 60mph with no damage.

We have a lot of testing results and information on the website.

Thanks,

Bill
