Kenwood, Pioneer, or stick with the PCM2?
Kenwood, Pioneer, or stick with the PCM2?
My only "complaint" about my "new" 997.1 Turbo was the PCM2. Clearly it wasn't a deal breaker but it would be nice to have a touch screen, better nav, and ipod connectivity. I also prefer to have a volume **** vice a full touch screen solution. I had looked at both of these units and am kind of on the fence. My girlfriend picked up both the Kenwood and Pioneer units for me for Christmas.
I don't know anyone with either unit to ask their opinion. I've found very little information online. One post stated the song titles would no longer display under the tach (I can live with that) but did not state if there was any other impact on the car. WRT the cars options I have the "thicker sport" steering wheel, adaptive sports seats, and sports chrono package. I called a local shop that stated there would be zero impact but the Kenwood was incompatible with the amplifier and they happened to have Pioneer units on sale. Bestbuy claims that both units will work in the 997.
I would greatly appreciate any informed opinions on whether to install one unit over the other or to keep the PCM and go with Dennison/NavTV for an ipod.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!!!

Im interested to see which you go with. Subscribed. Either have BT? That's a huge loss for me as is iPod integration. My m5 had everything. My 997.1TT doesn't even have Sirius. Lame.
I replaced the pcm2.1 in my recently purchased 2007 GT3 with a kenwood ddx330 because I really wanted a backup camera so I can see backing up to a parking place on the track paddock with the fixed rear wing and having 6 pt belts with necksgen Hans/type device(restricts head turning)
Has volume ****,pandora,am/fm radio, USB input,DVD CD player, ipod cable.Won't play DVD when in motion but you could override that with a bypass cable.
Did not want nav or Bluetooth ; would need ddx730 or other pricier model for that. Happy with my choice.

The day before you posted this I had just purchased a Pioneer X940BT with the Ipod cable (CD-IU201V), Sirius Satellite Modules (SC-C1, CD-SB10), Backup Camera (ND-BC6) and the Faceplate and Most HUR adapter from Loi at Euromotorsport. I also purchased the Bypass wire for on road video. I went with Pioneer because that what I had in High School. Just like the brand. I'm sure the Kenwood is just as comparable. I got fed up with the PCM 2.1 as well.
I will post pics once I get all installed however its looking like I will be mid January before thats done.
Good Luck.

I got the Kenwood 9990 for my 2007 997.1 TT. Ran the iPod cable into the arm rest area removing the 12 volt power plug and also have Sirius and Nav now. You can get a module that interfaces the Kenwood with the factory amp and steering wheel controls. Personally, I think it's a no brainer.
I'm also looking into these. My thoughts were the top of the line clarion. Looks the most capable at the moment but....
There's a lot of change about to come. The big thing now is getting the 7" iPads and Nexus 7 into cars and the porsche. Apparently, the GT3 Radio shelf benzel has a perfect fit to the iPad. Most of the stuff out there is still in development stages by the car stereo guru's and one of our forum members in the 997 section so there's no turn key solution yet. But I bet within a few months they will be on the market as kits.
So imagine if you have a iPad with 4G . You lose over the air radio but you now have the internet, so internet fm is possible. You can also install something like Co-Pilot for navigation and it takes no over the air data. The possibilities are big. You can have a bluetooth OBD connection and run software that looks close to the GTR's capabilities in this area..
Youtube, Duke Nukem....
Email that is delivered by voice, Home security checking..And it pulls out and goes with you when you leave the car.
The whole thing is easy to do.Just need to hook up the iPad connector to power, and L and R Channel out and feed it into a Nav TV Most Hur.
The hard part is the benzel and the looks! Just waiting for the Benzel and my CPO to run out!

Be careful on the idea of ipad or other personal tablets being mounted in your dash. You need to remove when you leave the vehicle as they were never intended for the harsh environment of 120 degrees in a sunny parking lot etc. I met an entertainment system engineer at BMW who cautioned me on this idea, and explained why cars take so long to adapt to new technology.

There are a lot of discussions on ipads already....My opinion is that the temperature and vibration is less of an issue. These devices have been engineered to meet the harsh environments of people handling it daily, tossing it in their bags, leaving it in their cars. I've seen frozen ipads turn on with no issues.

Great responses. Thanks all!
@za3879 yes sir they both have them.
http://www.kenwoodusa.com/car_entert...tion/dnx6190hd and http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...on/AVIC-X940BT
They look pretty much the same, though I think I like the look of the Kenwood's nav just a *bit* more.

I wonder if the sound quality suffers after getting these head units. I think you have Bose and therefore an amp is needed.
If nav, bt and iPod are important, go for it. I personally don't find the need over whelming for me to do the mod. I find most aftermarket stereo shops to be hacks that end up messing up something. For example, battery drain or squeaks.
Between the two, make sure both have the features you want. I would want nav, bt, xm, rear cam, iPod, hd radio and perhaps a mirror feature that shows what your smart phone outputs. It is easy to upgrade ur phone but harder to upgrade the stereo.

The sound quality of the units are fine. However, if you use the built in amps and run directly to the speakers you run the risk of introducing noise which can be tough to hunt down. Also, I'm not sure about the Bose on Porsche, but on infiniti for example, the Bose speakers are not the best without the Bose amp. Lot's of equalization going on in the amp itself to make up for the speaker characteristics.
I think the best is to add the Nav TV MOST Hur, which allows using the Bose with all of the aftermarket head units. The down side is the cost.

This is EXACTLY the type of info I'm looking for. Thank you!
