HELP!! Engine Misfiring
Hi all, i'm having a problem with my GT2 right now.. also i'm kinda new to it
Replaced my spark plugs recently and it seemed ok immediately after that. Started fine idling all good no signs of problem of what so ever. Took it out to town that night and felt a slight abnormal vibration.. then engine sounded like it's misfiring and the next thing i know, the engine died off.. towed it back home and left it there for a while..
did some research on the net on what may have caused it, most of the time i found that it may be caused by a faulty coilpack.. among other things..
now that i have some free time, i reopened everything to check if my spark plugs were faulty.. or if there were any signs of damage on the coilpack.. coilpack seemed ok.. but found that there were fuel residue on the spark plugs (all 6) and the smell was strong. there is also evidence of fuel present in the spark plug chamber as well.. first thing that popped to mind was my coil pack is faulty.. so i replaced with the old spark plugs (after cleaning them) and started the car again.. still misfiring and this time white smoke came out of the exhaust.. not just that, i found that one side of the exhaust is hotter then the other..
now i am totally dumbfounded and was wondering if any of you out there has experienced something like this before? if got, do share the cause

thanks for the info salerno.. will have a look at all the hoses around the mentioned places
regarding what you mentioned ranger, the check engine light is on and there is a warning info saying "TC Failure" if i'm not mistaken.. if this is the case, i'm gonna have to send it in to a service center..

GTRNick, this time around, the car was still on the hoist when the smoke came out.. and it was still at idling speed.. didn't even got to operating temp level
but during the first time i didn't rev or anything.. it was just city driving..

If it was fine before you did all this then maybe you did not put the sparks in correctly, maybe your coils are no good but this is all speculation! You also state you had a CEL ON BEFORE you did all this so that is not a great start as there could have been an issue before!!
My advice is to either buy a durametrics tester or take it to Porsche for a PIWIS test then from there you will find the culprit but to play a guessing game is no good!

i see.. yeah.. it could have been a bad move on my side about this.. the CEL only came on after the engine died when i first changed the spark plugs.. and i think you're right GTRNick.. maybe i should've taken it to the dealers instead of trying to solve it myself without the proper instruments..
I think for sure you need to have the codes read. This will point you in the right direction. From what you describe, you have at least one cylinder not firing (and you seem to have already diagnosed the #6).
The Durametric or PIWIS can point to this. If you have an OBDII reader, that should also give you a quick look at which cylinders are bad (Provided your TT is OBDII compliant, which might not be the case, as it appears you are in Qatar). OBDII readers are much cheaper then a PIWIS or Durametric.
One additional thing to consider is to down load the 996TT repair manual in the 996TT section, it's a sticky at the top. I believe the engines are the same though, and there should be a wealth of information on repair/diagnosing the coils. Have you taken an OHM meter to the coil terminals and checked for open circuits? Same goes for the coil connections to the wiring harness, are they in proper shape and have good readings?
I applaud you for working on the vehicle yourself, I know you are probably second guessing what you did, but when you finally figgure it out, you will have learned so much more about your car. Good luck
