Price/Market Check
Price/Market Check
I've been looking for a 2010-11 Turbo or Turbo S for a several weeks now - and what I find is the same cars at the same prices, the cars don't seem to be clearing the market. Is that normal? If I had a $100,000 depreciating asset, I'd be motivated to move it as soon as possible. So what gives?
A further assumption is that the 997s will decrease substantially after the 991 Turbo is unveiled - typical when a new model is introduced. If true, this should be starting to put downward pressure on 997 prices, especially the 2010-13 years. I'm not seeing lower asking prices, but as said above, the cars seem to be sitting for a while - roughly 90% (not a scientific measurement) of what is available today was available 3 months ago...
It also seems really hard to find a color other than black, silver or white!
Having said that, I've located a black (least favorite color) 2011 Turbo S with 17k miles and decent options for $112,000. Does that seem like a good deal? Would you wait?

Welcome to life in Porsche land! A few things to assist, I hope:
Yes, the price of the car you are looking for will get punished WHEN the 991 tt is out. But it is not out yet. But punishment will be relative, because the 991tt will be very expensive. You are asking to get the car that will get hurt the most, the highest priced S model. Because rest assured, the stock 991tt will beat the 997 Turbo S. Just plain marketing.
An '11 TT S for $112k is the cheapest TT S in the country. Even ones with 30k miles are listed for more. Cars in this range just don't move as quickly, but Porsches hold their values very well. The S was not made in '10. You can find '10 turbos under $100k, but not many. First year of the DFI with PDK, this is a sought after car. It would be much easier to find a '10 GT3. Also depends if you want a coupe or a cab, I think they made a bunch of S cabs. Not sure why, but I think they did. Good luck in the search!

Thanks, RyeM3
I've noticed there are quite a few cabs, and I really don't want a cab... Limits the pool further. If you take black cars out too (so many of them) there aren't many to choose from.
Is there a consensus on 991 Turbo pricing? I've heard rumors that it will be substantially more, but don't believe pricing has been released. Will be interesting for parent VW/Audi to have both a new R8 and Turbo 991 coming out in the same year - there's more than a little cross-shopping between the two vehicles...

Have there been issues with the Turbo 3.8? or PDK? I know you can't mod the 3.8 due to the DFI, but at this point, I plan to leave it stock anyway.
In a perfect world, I'd love to have the older Mezger engine, 997.2 suspension and PDK...
Too early to tell about the new motor. True enough, if you want pdk, you must go newer. I will add that if you want to lose the most money in a used turbo, the new turbo s will depreciate the most. A straight 10 pdk will probably hold up well.

It's spring & people are holding their price b/c cars are selling. Porsche dealerships are doing record #'s this year. These cars bring with them the experience of ownership.
Brinks or Wells Fargo don't go to the cemetery & if you're fussing about about the $ so much & just waiting for something better to come along 991 or whatever, then it's kind of like computers. You can wait & wait for something, in the meantime you have a slow crappy computer.

I would keep looking and continue the research. Understand the differences between the 997.1, .2 and S vs non S.
I would also look at some of the differences between the .2 Carrera and new 991. This will provide a foundation for some of the change for the turbo.
Go to dealers and drive cars, throw in the GT3 too. I think the new 3 coming out looks amazing and should have great performance to match.
Good luck in the search and hold out for everything you want - color, options, etc...it'll show up. Might it cost more...yep, that's the way it is.

I was in the same boat and didnt want to get a 997.2 since I had 2 997 before but got tired of waiting. Picked up a 12 tts cab and actually was only looking for a cab since my previous 2 were coupes.
I was searching for at least 3 months and finally found the car I wanted with at least 90% of the options.
Pricing will drop no matter what when a new model gets released but I for one won't be buying a NEW 991TT so why wait a few years when there isn't much else in the market comparable. Figured ill drive the tts for 2 years and upgrade later to the 991 once they depreciate...
Good luck with the search but the price of the 997.2 will only drop, just a question of how long you want to wait to save $. I didnt want to wait any longer.

Big thanks to all the contributors. It's certainly become a bit time consuming, but I'm being a bit picky about what I want and the price I'm willing to pay - especially the cost to drive the next year, until the 991 comes out...
Great board and really appreciate the experiences.

I got my '11tts coupe completely loaded and pristine condition for under $105 with 20k on the clock last fall...guy got in trouble, brought a check the same day it went on market. There are deals but this time of year is tough, you have to be looking when it's not the perfect time to have the car out and about...figure I will take a bit of a hit when the new one comes out, I'm hoping the 991 tts blows the doors off the 997tts, I'll happily take the hit and move on to the next insanely fast machine. But...life is short, if you have the means...don't wait, an extra $10k in depreciation is not what you'll remember when you are in the rocking chair in the nursing home 50 years from now...it will be the ridiculous 30-140 pulls you make in this car! Good luck in your search!
That was an insane deal. Higher mileage than many out there, but most are listed at least $20k more. You got lucky. Depends on other things too, of course. If it was brown, that's a different story. The next gen will be my upgrade; I'll be happy when the 991tt comes out, the S will be that much closer to my range!
It's black on black, was $172k new with all the options...I think I did alright, at least can't get hurt too terribly bad. But that's how I buy everything...lurk around, when something pops up, I don't hesitate & bring cash...it makes it hard for the person to say no! There are deals, just have to be ready to act!
