Over revs, what breaks?

Hi,

Had my 2007 turbo for almost 9months now, did get a durametric cable and of course found out the engine has a severe over rev history

The car is under warranty from Porsche and they offered me to extend it for an other year for $2000 and tells me that they tested the car prior to selling it and there is nothing wrong with it.

I had some 80 ignitions in range 6 at 300h ago, so I assume a year or 6 months before I got the car (trying to count backwards looking at service and inspection odo readings).

Is there any tests i can do to find issues?

I have not experienced anything wrong with the engine more than it is quite thirsty for oil in 9 months and around 2500miles it needed 1l (1/4 us gallon) of engine oil, but maybe that is normal (the car has done 40k miles).

Since the car is under warranty still (for 3more months) I would prefer to know for sure the engine is healthy. And one last thing it is 100% stock at the moment.

There is also a possibility something broke and previous owner had the engine repaired at an other dealer than the one I bought it, but i cant find any paper trail of that.

The valve springs basically don't have enough tension and begin to "float" at hi rpm, ultimately engaging the piston at TDC. This is why you see racing engines with super stiff or triple valve springs.
Rarely does the bottom end give out, in my experience.

So if this has happened the valves would be damaged and a leak test or compression test would be a good indicator of problems, or?

Dme

i have read on this forum that the Durametric can give funny readings on the DME in the higher ranges, so perhaps you would want it confirmed through the PIWIS. perhaps you might be pleasantly surprised to find it is not as bad as shown.

Yeah - don't worry about the oil...

from the owners manual...
(note oil consumption)...

Your attachment is for the 997.2 3.8 engine (non-Mezger) - OP has the 3.6 Mezger engine. I have no oil consumption on mine (2008 turbo).

Valid point - sorry about that. I generally use that manual for the easy stuff.
I have a 997.1 - so the 3.6 - drive it fairly hard and track her 4x/year - I go through a liter every 1k - 1,500 miles or so depending on time of year. She is not abused...but enjoyed!

ok, wrong engine, but I guess 1l 4000km is not a reason for concern...

No reason for concern for oil, no reason for concern for over rev.
Durametric should not be allowed to measure over revs. That way people would sleep better.

Save your money. The over revs (if real) occurred 300 hours ago. If there was any problem from the valve train (or any other part of the engine) from the over rev event you'd know it long before now.

Relax. You're getting or have been offered a warranty. BTW, the fact the dealer offered you a warranty -- as long as the engine isn't excluded due to the over revs -- suggest those over revs are shall we say phantoms?
