help with suspected mirror whistle
Fascinating. Removing/reapplying my film is a PITA (long story)...do you think that taping the entire mirror would reveal if this is the problem? Or might the tape itself cause a whistle?
Thanks! I will revisit the issue this weekend, but I am fairly certain that I have already taped over that area. But I will try again!
Getting my car to my installer is SUCH a pain, and removing the film also means reapplying my sealant, which means leaving the car there, etc. Argh!
I'm not saying take all the clear bra off the car. Just your driver side view mirror. I was able to apply clear bra to my side view mirror in about 10 minutes and it's 99% as good as when the "pro" did it. Really was no big deal, its just a mirror. Tape up the entire mirror and see if the whistle goes away. What I posted was just my personal experience. Take it for what its worth...but my bet would be on the clear bra film and if the whistle bothers you that much then its probably worth it to remove the film and see what happens.
Spent some time today diagnosing this, and seem to have found the issue. I taped up the entire mirror, plus the door seal area that Jako suggested. Whistle went away, yay!
I then moved on to narrowing down the specific area. I started by taking off the tape on the door seal, and still had no whistle, so that left the mirror. I began taking tape off the mirror bit by bit, until the whistle came back. I then removed the rest of the tape and put back the section of tape I had just removed, and confirmed I had no whistle. Taking away that section again resulted in a whistle. So now I can cover an area approx 1.5" x 6" with tape and have the whistle go away. So what is that area, you ask? It's pretty much in the middle of the part of the mirror that faces into the wind. There are no seams involved, so it DOES appear to be the film itself! That's right, covering a piece of film, without covering any edges, eliminated the whistle. So it appears to be this "micro surface aberrations" issue that CrazyMD had posted about.
I am relieved to have identified the issue, and ironically don't feel compelled to have it addressed ASAP, now that I know what it is...I will have my detailer/film guy address it next time the car is in for work.
Thanks very much to everyone for their help and suggestions...it is much appreciated!

Interesting idea. I already have sealer (Opticoat) on the film, but I can try some wax this weekend.
Hey Scott, thats EXACTLY where mine was whistling from. Right in the center. A piece of blue tape right there about 4-6 inches long and whistle would go away.
If the whistle bugs you enough, pull the clear bra off and roll the dice. I tried putting wax on mine and it did not help. But give it a try, nothing to lose.
Of note, when I re-filmed my mirror, I had NO whistle. So whatever it may be, bad film, 1mm off on the installation, etc...who knows. Just gotta figure out how bad that whistle bugs you. You've spent all this time diagnosing it...it would probably take half that time re-filming it. I couldnt stand the whistle so when I got to the point you are at now, I pulled the film off.
Let us know what you do...I'm curious

Sorry for the delay on providing an update...I did wax the relevant portion of the mirror, and it did not eliminate the whistle...if anything, it got a little worse. I am going to leave the film on for now, but when the vehicle is at my detailer to fix a bubble in the film on the front bumper, I will have him redo the mirror with the hope that it eliminates the whistle.
