help with suspected mirror whistle

I have a 997.2 TTS and have a whistle that seems to be coming from the driver's side mirror area. I have read lots about this here and elsewhere. However, when I taped the mirror as shown in the picture (it's hard to see, but the seal on the bottom is also taped) the whistle persists (although it seems to start at a slightly higher speed). When I fold the mirror in, the whistle stops, but of course that radically alters the airflow on that side of the car. I've tried taping over the windshield seams, the air vent seams, the luggage rack covers on the roof, all to no avail. The whistle happens with the window and sunroof open or closed, so I don't think they're the culprits.

Even with the tape on, might the mirror seam be the culprit? Where else should I look?

Could be coming from the seals. Try taking pheigme gummi.(can't spell it) apply to all the door rubber seals

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried driving with the door open a bit and the whistling persists, so I don't think it is the door seals.

Try opening the window while driving & see if it persists.

Yup, already tried that -- "The whistle happens with the window and sunroof open or closed, so I don't think they're the culprits."

Looking at your photo, how about increasing tape coverage past edges of forward lower triangular base. Thinking there could be a small gap somewhere along there, large enough for air to cause the noise, yet too small to see. If that doesn't work, open windows and downshift.

Best.

I still think it is coming from the door seals. Check the area where the mirror assembly attaches to the door. There is a rubber piece that connects to the outer seal of the door frame

Can you annotate my photo to show me where you mean specifically?

Ah, so you mean the seal between the mirror assembly and the door, not the door and the car. I did try taping that entire assembly (on all 3 sides of the triangle in fact) and that didn't seem to have any effect either. Is that what you were suggesting I try?

Nope. Open the door. Look over the mirror. There is a rubber seal which wraps around the door before it meets the mirror and the colour panel.

I'll see if it can take a picture of what I mean tomorrow. Raining cats and dogs right now

Yes, unfortunately, it was. My only other thought would be left (driver's) side of the windshield seal. But, wait, that doesn't make sense, since you've folded the mirror and gotten some lessening/tone change by so doing, right ?

Have you, in your taping, tried taping the entire mirror, to see if there might be a joint or seam which opens under wind pressure ?

My only other shot is taping the leading edge of the door-to-fender gap, then climbing in through passenger door. Long shot, I know, but that's all my pointy head can think of. Keep us posted...I'm fascinated by the mystery.

Do you have clear bra film on the mirrors?

I do. I can't rule this out as a possibility, but it is a really good install with no lifting edges or anything, so i doubt this is it. But I suppose I could try taping the edges. Then, the tape could cause a noise, I suppose

I'll give you my personal experience. I had the SAME problem. I spent a month Trying to diagnose it By endlessly driving the car up and down the street putting blue tape on the driver side mirror in different locations trying to figure out what area would cause the whistle to stop.

I finally was fed up with it and decided that I was going to take it to the dealer and have it looked at under warranty. I knew that the dealership would tell me that it was the clear bra and I thought to myself that there is no way that this would be the case. I figured let me just remove the clear bra so this can be removed from the equation.

As soon as I removed the clear bra, the whistling was gone. I could not understand why. I had no lifting edges, the installation was perfect, And there didn't seem to be any seams.

I had another piece of film cut for the mirror and I installed it myself. Two weeks ago I was at the Sema show in Las Vegas. I was at the xpel booth And mentioned the problem that I had to one of the guys there. He told me that sometimes when they manufacture the film, there is very slight microscopic variations in the surface of the film which can catch wind and create a whistle.

I have no idea whether this is correct or not. But I suspect that your problem may be coming from the clear bra film. Try removing it and see what happens. At the very worst case that piece cost about 20 bucks.

Hey Scott sorry for the delay. Here are the areas I can see to be potential problems?
