Porsche 997 Turbo Dynoed, VR Tuned, Stamp of Approval

Having had the chance to play with the Porsche 997 Turbo platform over the years, we are quite familiar with the drivability characteristics between a stock and tuned car. There are certain mods that do work, and some that don't. Each car and customer is different so we always look for ways to best assist someone in their goals. This Porsche 997 Turbo came to us locally here with some already completed modifications.

The 6 speed car had about 44000 on the clock and was in really good condition. Other mods included upgraded IK22 spark plugs, Agency Power BRVs, Agency Power Titanium Exhaust, Fabspeed Cold Air Intake, and a mild tune. Since the car was bought used, we did not have any more information on other maintenance, use, or mods the previous owner(s) might have done. Running 91octane pump fuel, we did baseline tests in both standard and sport mode. The baseline yielded about 430awhp and 450ft/lbs of torque. Naturally, Sport Mode would drop off power on the top end because of EGT temps. The car held boost consistantly at 15psi and 18psi respectively.

The Mustang All Wheel Drive Dyno has an approximate drivetrain loss of 20-25%, and with 91 octane, that number is definitely closer to 25%. Since the Mustang Dyno is based off of load, it presets all the cars information to calculate what real world conditions would be. We always have our Parasitic Multiplier set to 1.00 (only variable to really manipulate if you wanted to). With RPMs calibrated to 3000 and doing a 3rd gear pull, we do a start test at 2500rpm and a stop test at 6800rpm. The flash is rated at 615bhp which is 135bhp over stock! Based on these numbers and a 25% drivetrain loss, the wheel horsepower number should be about 460awhp.

After reading out the car with the VR Tuned iFlash Client, we had the cars ECU calibration updated based on the modifications, and outcome we were looking for. Keeping all the variables the same including fans, gear run, start and stop test, the new file gave the car a output of 464awhp and 498ft/lbs of torque. From tune to tune we were able to gain 8% in horsepower and 10% in torque.

The owner previously had a Porsche Cayman that he would notice heat soak and the cars performance go down in our hot Arizona summers. This was a concern for him on the tune with the 997 Turbo. Since calibration takes into account the factory knock sensors and the fact that we are using 91 octane, the car will be safe in the summer. Running some octane booster, race gas, or a water/meth injection system is always a good alternative when temps go up to keep close to the same cold weather performance. The only negative with a ECU tune like this is keep your eye out for clutch slippage. The excess power on the OEM disk and pressure plate really take a beating for those 60-130mph pulls!

Check out the video of the runs and view our Dyno Sheet with flash pictures below. Comments appreciated!

We had recently shared this customers Porsche 997 Turbo with dyno sheet, mods, and a brief dyno run video. Part of our ongoing marketing campaign is giving real world testimonials from customers driving their cars day to day. We did a before and after on this car here on our Mustang AWD dyno. The car already equipped with a Agency Power titanium exhaust and Fabspeed intake put down a respectful 460awhp. A stock 997 Turbo makes 480 horsepower to the crank. The Mustang Dyno sees about a 20-25% drivetrain loss. This puts stock horsepower at 360awhp. The flash with these mods added a nice 100HP to the customers car. This Porsche is now a real monster! Check out the video below.
