I have something similar. Rattle or clatter sound coming from the engine at low load and low RPM. My dealer noticed it too and they are checking it out right now. I love my CPO warranty!

I'll update with what they find.

Its normal, if they don't know about it I wouldn't even let them touch the car.

On occasion, I have had a rattle coming from the rear of the car as well on start-up and during initial idle. It always seems to be one of two things:

1) The heat shield around the exhaust tips (inside the rear bumper liner) sometimes gets a little tweaked and comes just close enough to touch and vibrate on the exhaust system on start-up and at certain rpm's.

2) The dust shield behind the rear rotors occasionally gets tweaked as well from road debris and will actually vibrate against the rotor when you first start the car (hard/rough idle). It has a very distinct sound. One way to confirm this is while driving at very low speeds with your windows down, turn the vehicle left and then right, if you hear a rubbing sound or something vibrating as you are turning, it will most likely be the dust shield barely touching the rotor under load.

Hope this helps?

The Rattling noise your speaking of is below 2000 RPM correct?

Its the IMS shaft all normal. The IMS is gear driven on all the GT1 blocks. While slightly different on a GT3 still gear driven.

My advice rev your engine more or get a slighly louder exhaust.

The Mezger engine is worth it.

Yes, looks like it is at low RPM's and I actually just installed straight pipes today and haven't put attention to the rattling, I'll check tomorrow

Thanks.

I have been fighting what I described as a gnome in my engine bay clacking two hammers together for a while now.

I think it's been found now though, the issue appears to have been caused when the engine was lowered to install AMS Inlet pipes they (my local shop, not AMS) pulled some of the coolant lines out of the guides towards the front of the car under the aero shielding.

That was the explanation I got today, I'm going in the morning to pick it up and give it a listen. I have some video of what it sounds like from the drivers seat I'll post it.

I've heard the usual Metzger rattle, and exaust rattle. This one was totally different and sounded VERY bad. It *only* occurs under heavy load too which made it pretty bizarre.

I purchased my 2007 last November, with only 15k miles on it. It took about a month for me to notice a rattle from the rear. I first noticed the rattle when I was driving through a parking lot. I didn't give it much thought because I didn't notice it all the time. For the last month, I've been trying to figure out when I start to hear the rattle. It begins to rattle after the car has warmed up, when just starting off from a stop or from a very low speed. It happens at about 1800 rpm. I can't tell if the rattle subsides after that rpm level because there's more noise from the exhaust that might be covering up the rattle. It definitely doesn't occur below 1800 rpm.

I put the car in park a few times and revved the engine very slowly to just past 1800 rpms. I didn't hear the rattle at all. The engine sounded really good. This has me thinking that it might have something to do with the transmission.

A couple of days ago, I took it to an very well known independent Porsche only shop for an oil change, brake flush, and typical visual/DME inspection. I mentioned the rattle to them, but when I went to pickup my car later that day, they didn't say anything about a rattle and I forgot to ask. I have an extended warranty on it, so I might take it to the dealer. I'll post on this forum again if and when I do take it to the dealer.

I got the car back yesterday with the same noise. Pretty bummed out about it now. I have to travel for business the next few weeks so I doubt I'm going to make any progress for a while.

Rix,

The noise are you talking about. Does it sound like a very loud metallic popping sound at full throttle and peak torque? Easy2Speeds car does this also, and we haven't been able to figure it out yet either. It sounded like something was/is hitting when the motor torques over under full load, but the motor recently came out to fix the coolant fittings and nothing was found.

I've scoured the internet and found a couple of other people who have complained of the same thing over the years, but no real solution was posted and we haven't gotten any response from those posters.

Log-wise, the pulls look perfect. No timing pull or anything, just that loud popping sound. This the same as you?

Yes, sounds like a very similar situation.
