Turbo comparison – 997.1 to 997.2 – old news but new to me!
cannga, you have some exquisite taste!!......I love your red beauty and your audio equipment. What speakers are running?
I feel like we could talk all day about audio equipment and cars lol
I am die hard fan of two channel though so no mx 151
My apologies for threadjack

Very insightful review as expected and thanks for the chuckle regarding the audiophile setting (you might remember I am even nuttier about audio than cars, all-out system with tube preamp and the works).
Also very interesting comparison between BMW and Porsche 997.2 Turbo PDK shift speed. You probably remember too I have 2011 M3 with PDK which I absolutely love and alternate driving with my manual 997.1 Turbo; I also drove 997.2 Turbo PDK but only for about half an hour. Don't remember the lag being significant, but... it was a short drive, unlike yours.
Is the 997.2 lag that bad and when you switch to Sports setting, does the shift speed then the same between M3 and 997.2 PDK?

Well, my M3 was a 6 speed, so can't comment on the BMW DCT. Just to be more precise, it isn't an actual SHIFT lag, it's a lag between when you shift with a paddle and when the shift actually occurs. In the sport setting, the timing is improved. Actually, in sport mode with automatic shifting, the shift timing is almost ideal. It upshifts at about 4k, unless you are really on it AND automatically DOWNSHIFTS as you slow down. This isn't a Cadillac automatic! I still prefer to be in complete control, but the PDK programming was done pretty well.
Ok, I'll give in to a little thread diversion! My front end only - PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC, Rowland Concerto Preamp and Logitech Squeezebox to feed uncompressed digital files via ethernet from my computer. The fat cable is the power cable to the DAC. Rowland monoblocks on the speaker end...
Thanks man! Lyric, OMG I can't stand that guy... we have so many high end shops around here, owned by so many obnoxious guys. Rutan at Audio Connection is about the only guy I'd deal with, but I've bought almost all my stuff used.
Gotta love the Watt/Puppies. Amazing stuff.

Indeed! I might start one. Wonder if we could keep it as an OT thread on this board?!
Anyway, maybe we can get this comparison thread back in topic!

Gas mileage
Now that we have an audio thread, back on topic!
I haven't driven that many miles, but I'm finding my mileage to be about 2 mpg WORSE with the .2 than a .1. In spite of the 7 spd highway driving.
Do I drive in manual? yes
Do I get on the boost? yes
Still, I did that before, so I'm wondering why the mileage is worse. Others have the same experience?

The shift speed of the stock Porsche 997.2 PDK built by ZF and the stock BMW M3 DCT built by Getrag are fairly similar (although my M3 shifts much quicker now because I have the upgraded DCT GTS software). However the engagement is what is the big difference. Click the paddles on the M3 and you get an instant shift/feedback. With the Porsche, you pull the paddles seemingly a full inch or more and even after that there is a delay in shifting. If I want to shift the Porsche at 6,500 RPM in 2nd gear, I have to pull the paddle at 6,000. Annoying.
Agreed. I'm curious, do you run in auto in sport? Even at moderate speeds, it seems to select the rpm very well AND downshift as you slow down. I find it funny, the MOST delay is on the 1 to 2 shift - higher shifts occur more quickly, really the opposite of what is needed.

When I'm at the track with the Porsche, I want to control the car so I use the paddles but must consider the delay when executing shifts.
Cool. Unfortunately not worth complaining about as the response time was vastly improved in the 991 pdk. Someone posted a video of a software solution, but I'm not quite convinced it is that much better and that it would be worth the cost.
