Steering Issue- Please help.

HI Guys-

My car has been in the shop for the last 3 days. Unable to diagnose this issue. Steering is loose. It seemed to happen after a track day. I have it at a reputable Porsche mechanic. We have checked every possible issue. Wheels have been realigned. all linkage is checked and tight- both uppers and lowers. Running out of ideas. Thoughts? Watch the below video.

Mechanic is now suggesting maybe my Zunsport grill prevents downforce. LOL. Obviously not the issue. Thoughts?? Watch this video. Feels fine at normal speed. At high speed (80+ mph) its very noticeable.

Meant to say- the issue began after a track day. The video was taken at about 80mph. Feels loose in the corners and at high speeds.

I can't offer any advice other than I sure as hell wouldn't be taking my car to a mechanic that makes such ridiculous guesses. That's the most idiotic theory I've ever read.

suggesting maybe my Zunsport grill prevents downforce.

He's actually one of the top Porsche Mechanics in Michigan. He's just out of ideas and did mention that by me cutting out the foils and putting in that grill I lost down force.

I agree it idiotic. He's just frustrated.

I can see it reducing downforce, but the idea of that reduced downforce causing steering play is what I found comical.

Good luck with it. Had similar issues on my old Rover and went to hell and back with diagnosing it.

Not knowing what it is, I wouldn't be playing with the steering wheel like that at 80 MPH on public roads.

It sounds to me that you have blown the power steering unit. I am guessing the gears or there is air in the fluid. The power steering fluid has a tendency to spill over when it gets hot especially if you open the engine after a run (the fan there is to draw cool air to cool the equipment (including the power steering unit) that sit on top of the engine.

Let us know what you find out though.

I agree either steering fluid is cooked or you have a steering leak.....

I know it doesn't have a leak because I have a finished garage floor. I haven't seen any fluid on it.

Isn't all the linkage mechanical? If so, I wouldn't think the fluid would be the issue- but I'm no porsche steering expert.

Has anyone seen this before?

OP easy enough to diagnose if it's a power steering leak, just open the cap and check the level. if you're substantially low then you have your answer.

btw you may not have a leak in the power steering but if the clutch slave is failing it will "rob" the fluid from the power steering and push it out the clutch reservoir which is located in the front. If you find that the PS fluid is in fact low, then check the clutch reservoir and see if it's over flowing.

Good Luck
Art

Getting an alignment done tomorrow. We'll see what that does. Also going to inspect the u-joint at the base of the steering column, possible fluid issues, power steering unit, rack inspection.

Any other ideas?

I felt that my car steering was a little "loose" at high speed last year. Just changed my tires (stayed with Pilot supersports) and couldn't believe the transformation. No new alignment just the new tires (balanced obviously). I guess the couple of beatings at the track were enough to cause this and they were about due for replacement anyway, although they weren't "worn out" on inspection. good luck

I would second this thought. Could be worn out edges on the tires.

just watched your video - not sure that's what I experienced. Just didn't feel as stable at high speed as before, until I changed the tires.
