Serpentine Belt / Tensioner
Serpentine Belt / Tensioner
Hey all,
Just shredded a belt at the Track this weekend.
Is everyone replacing the tensioner, deflector along with the Serpentine Belt when doing this service?
Thanks,

Thanks for your input.
I am at 58K and Porsche recommends 60K or 6years, whatever comes first. I think I am at both ends of the spectrum.
I have found some replacement kits that replace the pulley at the same time. The pulleys contains bearing replacement within the pulleys which obviously fail over time with use.

i just had issues with my 07 997.1TT, 25K miles- replaced belt with stock porsche belt when i had other work done in July. After replacing had rattling/squeeking type noise with rpms >2k (driving or idling, AC on/off made no diff). - sounded like pulley or bearing- would come & go after driving- dealer replaced 2 idle pulleys under CPO- noise still there. Back to dealer- replaced tensioner pulley- noise still there- verified that alternator was not making noise by substituting alternator-
dealer installed my old belt (with about 25k miles on it)- noise less but still there- They bought/installed a Goodyear Gatorback serpentine belt # 4060900 & this fixed the noise-
Tech told me he uses this on new turbo's when owners complain of belt squeel in rain- said it works every time- (don't buy the belt # shown for car from goodyear as it is too short & wont fit- according to dealer- get belt # 4060900- fits perfect).
In my case i was sure it was bearing noise, as was dealer head tech- i was shocked that noise was solved by replacing the new belt that I bought from Sunset Porsche & had installed 6 weeks earlier-- with a goodyear gatorback. (tech said it may have been that porsche belt was dried out, etc- he wasn't sure)-
Hope this helps-

Great info! You even had part numbers. Thanks. I will replace the belt with what you have outlined.
Did the dealer mention that it is normal to replace the pulleys when doing this type of service?
elite1- no it's not routine to replace pulleys when replacing the belt, though it's not unheard of for pulley bearings to wear at 30 or 40k miles. When belt is off ck pulleys, water pump, alt for any noise or play though & replace if necessary. Especially if higher mileage.
I had my dealer initially replace my belt with stock porsche belt i furnished them. Car/belt was 7+ yrs old with only 25k miles on it. They were taking off rear bumper, etc to install EP1 exhaust so had them do other maintenance work at same time (plugs/coil packs, belt, etc). When i got car back it make rattling bearing type noise that was not there before.
Took it back for fix- 2 times- 3 pulleys replaced but that didn't stop noise- Head tech decided to take off the new belt they installed few months earlier & replace it with Goodyr Gatorback they get from local european auto parts store- that solved my issue-
