Cobb (Protuning) vs Other tunes
Cobb (Protuning) vs Other tunes
Hey Guys,
I've been lurking for quite a while, however I have a few posts to make in the next few days.
The first one; Which I know has been discussed 100+ times.
Last year I purchased a Softronic tune, Overall I've been happy with it. however It looks like most of the innovation has switched to the COBB tuner (to be honest, I purchased a week prior to the COBB being released! Doh..)
Anyway, I live in a spot where all we get is Crap 91 octane, so I made the investment to go with a Methanol Injection kit (HFS-3). However on discussion with Softronic, I got the feeling that I probably wouldn't get a proper tune for it; so for right now I'm running the base '91' tune.
Is it worth the $2k+ to 'upgrade' to the COBB tuner and go with a Protune?
I know people are waiting on the fancy additions to be added to the COBB base file (no lift shift, etc)
Has someone figured out a way to have boost table switching? (for the Meth injection fault to be inputted into?) I really don't care much to create a VNT fault as previously outlined to drop the boost.
To be honest I come from the world of universal ECU's, so dealing with this stock ecu + tune is slightly restrictive... With that said, I'm dirt at actually tuning myself

I have had the Softronic tune (93) for a while and have been very happy with it. Nothing against the other tuners, but I know Scott is a Porsche expert and the tunes make extremely high AND SAFE gains. Also proven for many years.
Cannot answer your questions though..I suppose you can spend the money, but doubt you will get much additional HP than Softronic, and what you do get may be risky.
Anyway, that is MY experience with Softronic, and my car runs great and no issues, so I am comfortable with it. I know it is proven for many years.
Personal preference (and Marking) I guess.
Good luck with your decision....

I guess my question revolves more around the Meth injection...
I know I have much more power on tap because of the 91 octane tune is restricting me as it doesn't account for the meth additions.
Having a bunch of Subaru friends; they swear by the use of Meth; Although it hasn't been used a whole lot in our circles it seems.

The nice thing about the AP is that you can tune for it and make sure that you are utilizing the meth injection 100%.
Always going to make more power with a custom tune. If you have meth injection then you will be able to push the car a little further if on pump gas.
Another plus with the AP you can always switch to another map if you need if you run out of meth or are running race gas.
We also have a lot of upgrades coming. I added a lot of tables today and there are a lot of custom features coming.
Lots of up sides to the AP please let me know if you have any questions!

Just to answer one of your concerns which mitch eluded to without saying directly. You were said you were holding off on cobb until the new fancy features come out.
Realize if you buy now its free to upgrade firmware/software as they come out with new stuff/"fancy features". You could buy now and hold off on the custom tune if you wanted to wait for the new features.

With our Cobb custom tuning we will also retune as you add bolton mods to your car free of charge after the first purchase. Canned tunes are ok and work well in most cases but many times we find even with canned tunes the cars need a little more attention to detail to make them work at their best. With an AP you also get a killer datalogging/diagnostic platform and won't ever need to bring a laptop in the car with you to log. With this approach getting support from us as your tuner is just an email away and our response time is 24 hours, in many cases just an hour or two, even on weekends
We've done quite a bit of meth tuning with Aquamist kits and are having great results on our 997.1 and 997.2 shop cars with them installed. Let us know if any questions at all.

i have seen a member here with a softronic flash that switched to cobb on dyno and id say it was worth every $1.

Thanks for all the replies..
I'm in no way knocking the softronic tune
It's just made for people with stock cars that want a 'bit more'
Protuning... I see you guys are based out of Ontario, That's always comforting; I'll be in touch shortly when I get everything settled. I'm out of Newfoundland, So I'm sure you can imagine our crap gas here...
I'm all about finally using the most of the meth injection..

One thing to keep in mind was The base file(s) for these later custom tunes had been Softronic. While you can generate more power by increasing the boost it is not recommended. These cars had simply the Softronic file altered for more boost so it wasn't actually custom tuning the car. Perhaps they should have been flashed to stock and then tuned.... So is it fair to say it was custom tuned or simply modded the Softronic file? One shows a dyno putting out black smoke or unburnt fuel from the added boost that was added to the Softronic file. I think most know what this does to the cats and the fact of why the fuel is being dumped.
Others show the same power after the custom tuning that we have shown on the same type of dyno's years ago and still do with our tune. The difference was the first dyno in what it shows before the custom tuning that looks low and doesn't line up with others. So the end results had been the same yet initial dynos are not. There can be several explanations for this and a simple one is some had been run in sport while others had not been etc.
Best,
Scott

This is 100% a custom tune from start to finish. This is what makes our product different is that each person can make there own files to there liking and there "style" of tuning. Different ways to tune cars and the Porsche DME is no different.
Mitch
this is false.

This is false. In order for the car to be retuned with an AP the car is flashed back to stock and the tuner starts from a stock map or our OTS maps. We do not modify other tuners files period.
This is 100% a custom tune from start to finish. This is what makes our product different is that each person can make there own files to there liking and there "style" of tuning. Different ways to tune cars and the Porsche DME is no different.

Actually you can mod the existing file in which is a stock tuned file or altered map. Perhaps others that use a different build require it to be flashed to stock or original as the programming is different, like a switching set up that changes the processor. You had asked me about a year ago if I had marked my files so they could be found if they are ours and mentioned you could just read them out anyways. Making changes to our file would be the same as making them to a stock file yet the tables have already been changed thus allowing further changes. The issues would be to know the other changes that do not show up in the tables.
Best,
Scott

We start with a 100% stock ROM from Porsche specific to the particular car it is on, and then start from that map from scratch.
We store files on the AP when it installs. The user has the choice of either saving the data on the car, which might be a tuned file, or they can choose to skip that step and will revert to a 100% stock file. This only saves the file for when you uninstall. (Another great feature of the AP)
If a tuning file is on the car before the install and the user chooses to save it, it gets stored on the AP. It cannot be read, modified or altered in anyway. From there we put on a stock map to start tuning with. Any other tune is then no longer on the ECU in any way shape or form. So when the car is getting tuned this is 100% a map from one of our tuners.
