Exhaust and tune for sure are the best place to start. From there I would say plenum and then intercoolers.

Great gains to be had in doing just simple modifications.

Not sure if you are stating your opinion or asking for others' opinions....But here are my thoughts if you are asking If not, just ignore...everyone has opinions and preferences.

In order of difference for the $$:

1. Tune
2. Exhaust (free flowing cats)...This will even enhance the performance of the tune
3. Intercoolers
4. Intake ducts (do not waste the money on Plenum/TB/Diverter valves/ BMC Oily filters/Etc.)
5. Semi Solid Engine Mounts
6. Semi Solid Transmission Mounts

Unless you are a pro driver and/or going to track the car, leave the suspension...with the exception of possibly some adjustable sway bars...

That gets the car fast and tight for a reasonable spend...IMO.

And now everyone else will express their opinion....and perhaps some experts will point out where I am wrong

Good luck!

I think you're on the right track. There are several opinions but most will get pretty close when it comes to this. Depends on your goals. There are definitely massive games to be had as well as making the car not sound like an air pump!

Enjoy the ride!

Curious what parameters are changed in a tune to accommodate a different exhaust? Just wondering, as I was informed that if you have a tune and add items like exhausts and other bolt-ons, the global settings/tables in the ECU adjust (as they have a range of values) without the need for a re-tune.

Just interested in learning more about what you are suggesting in needing to add the exhaust first to get the benefits of the tune?

Thanks in advance...

Good point on the clutch! Since I do not have a MT I never think about that...But I understand they start slipping pretty quickly with just modest mods.

I'm assuming that the o/p will be going from a factory exhaust to a catless maybe 3" open exhaust as an upgrade. in this regard retuning would be expected as your freeing up restriction in the exhaust system ( as well as possibly needing rear O2 sensors to be turned off to eliminate cel light.) in this regard its easier for both the tuner and the owner to have whatever mods he wants to add in place so the tuner can tune once and do it right the first time vs having to go back and retune later ( possibly as the weather and items change thus changing the dynamics of the initial tune.

now let me also say that I'm speaking from 996t experience and its very likely the 997 dme is much more sophisticated than mine was before going standalone.
if i have learned anything its every tuner i have spoken to prefers to have as many mods in place before tuning.

I think it all depends on your final power goals. You have to remember the level of modding you will do. Are you going to stop at bolt-ons or going all out with bigger turbos, upgraded fuel systems etc...

For bolt-ons I started with a (1) tune (softronic), that way I could use any (2) exhaust I want without getting a CEL (cat bypass), (3) intercoolers would be next and (4) intake

Goals are one point but, where do you plan on your build being in the end? ("end" never happens BTW in every situation.)

I spent over 30K in one year clueless. I didn't understand where I wanted the beast to be.

Sunday cruising, drag, or track? Each one of these choices would have had a very different outcomes. I wanted speed in a line but quickly realized that the track was much more rewarding for me.

Personally, I would take your car out and try each scenario on a stock build and find what finds you personally rewarded, then improve that situation.

Just my $0.024
