Help me decide if 997tt is right for me
Hello,
So ill start off by saying im in the military, and was lucky enough to be stationed in germany for 3 yrs, so i had a chance to experience some cool cars there. I had an e90 m3 (manual), which i had supercharged (600hp). After a while i got tired and bought a c6z06, which i slightly modified (about 550-580bhp). I loved that car, but when i got assigned back to US, the shipping company did a lot of damage to the car, so i had to get rid of it. Due to a need for a car asap, i jumped into the new m3(manual). The m3 is amazing, really a great car, but after 3 months i cant fall in love with it, something is missing in it for me. I loved all my other cars, but this one doesnt cut it for me
plus, im getting stationed back to germany for another tour, the new m3 seems a bit slow up top, and is limited to 155mph (chip to delimit it is $5k). My e90 topped out at 209mph, my z06 did a tad over 200mph, the delimited f80 is around 190.
997 has been on my radar before (and 996 before that too), so im thinking of getting into it. Did anyone experience any of the cars that i had, and switched to 997? Can u comment on the feeling? Im looking for manual only car, 997.1.
Also, ill track again once im in germany. Is 997tt a reliable track car? I never had issues with the z nor my e90. I was able to run right under 8min around nurburgring in my z06(on street tires), and had 7:45 in my sc e90(semi slicks)
Can a decent driver in 997tt keep up with a c6z06 around the track?
As far as autobahn, i know the z06 is faster (i ran quite a few turbos on the autobahn), but how about high speed cruising? My e90 was cruising at 5-6k rpm at 150-160mph, but in z06 i was at 3k rpm (180mph was at 4k rpm). What is the rpm at 150-160mph in a manual car?

I had a c6z06 and have driven an e92 m3 albeit stock. I also had a modded e90 335. I would say the overall feel of the 997 was closer to 335 than vette. The c6 was a lot faster in stock form and a more wild ride. It also had more usuable storage space and got better gas milage. It sounded better and was cheaper to maintain. That all being said the 997 is a nicer car. I think itll take a tune and exhaust to be close to as fast as a 550 hp z06. The z06 is 300lb lighter. The 997 cruises well at high speed but at the speeds youre talking will be spinning some rpms. It is geared higher than the vette. I seem to recall im spinning about 2.8-3k rpm at 75 or so in 6th in 997 vs like 1700-1800 in vette on hwy.
here are the areas i say the 997 wins. The handling feel and steering feel are much better in the 997 although max grip is probably the same. Some ppl mod the suspension on the 997tt trying to get it closer to gt3 handing. The 997 feels like a smaller car and is easier to see out of than the vette. Like i said it is nicer and quieter than my vette was. It drives much better in the weather. I can actually still have fun in the 911, in the vette i would just have to go point a to b. Lastly i have used the back seats in the 911. While they are small they are there. As an only car daily driver i would definitely say the 997tt is better. Based on your previous post it may be worth looking at a c7, c7z06, or zr1.

Thanks. Yes, the precision is what im lacking. The new m3 seems too synthetic. Z06 was not very precise. I am considering a zr1, its all there, but steering may still be vague. Base c7 is just a bit too simple... I cant afford a new z06. If i do get a 997, i will put a chip in it, to get it closer to z06 performance. I am however still concerned with reliability at the track, and it being 6 yrs old...a lot of money for a 6yr old car to beat on (what drove me away from 997 in the first place).
With a 997 turbo you get about 600-620hp with software and an exhaust system.
With this level the car is much faster than a z06 and more reliable esp. on the track.
The Turbos need less hp to be faster then other cars and they tend to use less fuel.
A M3 V8 without a supercharger is not nearly a opponent for a standard 997 turbo.

Do you have a big wallet? Check
Big *****? Check
Buy a 997tt
Joking aside... 997 is civilized until you approach 700+ hp. Even then, it's solid and not unpredictable. I daily an e90 335i and I've lost count of how many m3's supercharged or otherwise I've gone through. Had an LS2 RX-7, multiple turbo'd vehicles, the 997 is really the best all around package for me.
Now.. you could snag an e90/e92 335i N54 and do a Motive 750 on it and go ape **** for 40k vs the base + 10k you'd need to get a quick(er) 997tt. More so if you go with a "name brand" kit like AMS or Evo.
E92 supercharged = snooze. They lack the fun stuff (torque).
The corvette was never an option for me as everyone and their mother drives one and I see at least two new c7z's a day in my area. The turbo is fairly common, but not anywhere near the vette.
Find a local on the forum and buy them lunch, go for some rides.
