997.1 Turbo phase 2 time (conversion to 'standard' turbos)

I am hoping to start the conversion of my car over to bigger turbos and ProEFI in the next week or 2.

I am going to go to Precision 5558s, along with their waste gates. For now I plan to keep the boost low(ish) to keep the rods in check. hopefully with the proEFI + external WGs I can have pretty good control over peak tq. Also bigger intercoolers and injectors to give me some head room for now.

In order to minimize the down time I opted to buy fabricated headers (thanks Undercover!). I will be building the turbo back and any other misc stuff I need.

In order to get my ducks in a row, was hoping to attack some simple things that I can think of needing to know before I even get the car on the lift.

I have most of the material here, and a shop full of generic AN hose and fittings, so I am mainly trying to grasp at "porsche stuff" i might be missing. most of it is around the feed/return of the oil for the turbo. I will be capping the coolant lines obviously since these are not water cooled.. I am assuming nothing crazy there.

1) oil feed. Turbo side is easy. What do I need on the block side as far as thread sizing goes for the oil fitting, or should I weld a fitting to the factory hardline?
2) Oil return. factory uses tanks. Will a standard -10an setup work? Same question as above on fittings
3) exhaust manifold gaskets. stock or other?

I realize some of the solutions for this will materialize as soon as I have the motor dropped and in front of me, but I am hoping to have as many misc hardware I need sitting on my work bench so I can plow through as much as possible.

i dont remember on oil feed sizing. but for the return you want to buy a PTE oil drain flange then weld it to the stock oil tank to mate them up to the precisions. you need to continue using the tank or make new tanks from scratch.

for gaskets, i always use stock gaskets from pelican parts.

recommendations on cart for the motor/trans? I was considering just a platform 12" off the ground, since I am using a lift and can lift the chassis off the motor vs lowering the motor. If I did not have the lift I would invest in a hyd scissor cart, but one that will do 1K+lbs is expensive and probably not needed...

However, would be nice to have it higher than ground level. What does the thing weigh?

Other than welding the coolant lines, anything else I need to hit on while the motor is out?

The motor will be back out probably next winter for a rebuild so internal stuff can wait.

What about plugs? I assume one range colder and gap them down a little bit compared to stock?

in and out.

Question:

The motor has obviously been out before, and the slave replaced. Not sure what I am looking at.. The casting number does not seem to correlate to any porsche PN.

Just wondering if it is stock or not. The clutch is fairly grabby, so I am guessing it is aftermarket. Hoping it is, heh.

Turbos bolted up.

Plan to machine the stock oil tanks and build lines this week, get them installed and the motor back in next weekend. Then I have to start fabbing intake tubing (pressure and inlet sides) and exhaust.

Inlet side is going to be a PITA, I can tell.

Thinking about going ahead and installing a flex fuel sensor.. looks like I could simply put it between the main feed and the rail easily.. but will this cause a flow issue? Never used one.. If I was building a fuel system from scratch I would plumb it into the return.

Pardon the retarded question, but how do those Precision's spool compared to the VTG's? Looks HUGE compared to stock turbo.

No where near as quickly.. we'll find out here in a few weeks.

Give and take.. more efficient at the top end means boost comes on at a higher RPM.

My last boosted car was a 7.0 Liter Z06, I am guessing the boost will come on slower
