New Build: Champion VTG's + Intercoolers + ...

I've picked up a pair of Champion Motorsports 997.1 68mm VTG's and Intercoolers (and all the air hoses) from two members on here. And looking to have them installed ASAP.

Few things I'm unclear on:

1) Does one have to upgrade the Injectors? I'm only going to be using 94 Octane gas, and will not be looking to update the engine internals - so not looking to push the BHP envelope.

2) Can I add the bolt-on's, and then a few weeks later, upgrade the ECU? (Currently I'm running a softronic, and potentially looking at updating with softronic or switch to Champions recommended GIAC or even Cobb).

Finally - Tom @ Champion seems to be MIA!
Sent him a few emails but I think he may be on holiday
Tom, if you are lurking, please get back to me.

Thanks!

You will want to upgrade the ECU file for sure at the time that you put the new parts on.

If you are staying on pump gas then you should be fine on the stock injectors.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Mitch - your reputation exceeds you on these forums
Really appreciate the fast response.

Do you have any Cobb re-sellers in/near Vancouver,Canada and do you have any maps specifically tailored to this particular application (CMS 68mm + CMS IC's + Exhaust)? I'm still unclear on the entire process you offer. How much time do you dedicate to something such as this that's a bit more custom than the "standard" map?

FYI: I'm running full 200 cell TechArt Exhaust.

@IMIA: Yes, those are champion VTG's. I remember some time back that 911tuning had some for sale - don't see them there any more.

We have protuning freaks that is up in Canada! I would reach out to them as they have great experience with the 68mm VTG's and your exact gas. They would be perfect for tuning of your turbos!

If you have any questions please feel free to email me!

Nice buy! I was eyeing those 68s but decided to stick with what I've got (FVD 66s).

My car is in Mississauga right now getting new injectors and a few more carbon upgrades (courtesy of TighTT) to complete the Champion/Werks1 package and then it will be in the hands of PTF for tuning. Looking forward to the results.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay...I'm here...no holidays for me

I just sent you back an email about 20 minutes ago. I was having some major technical issues with my computer over the past few days (i.e. I hate Apple!).

I've gone that full route!! Unfortunately I did push the limit and bent 3 rods.
I would recommend that if you want the increased power with the 68s and intercoolers, etc. stick with the stock injectors. Go the larger injectors only if you are willing to do an engine build as a result of pushing the limit of a stock engine.
My engine build has just started and I hope to realize all the power the 68s are capable of.

while i see your point i dont necessarily agree with it. upgrading injectors gives you more headroom in fueling to support the big turbos. leaving stock injectors on 68mms is pointless. if you run them safe and manage your torque rods should stay straight.

in fact i can post a picture of the rods that came out of the car that these 68mm turbos came off. running 80# injectors to the max on E85. rods were straight except 1 or 2 had slight tweaks ( we are talking 1-2mm).

poor tuning, bad fueling (or fuel) and unrealistic expectations along with 5th gear pulls are the enemies of stock rods.

Agreed @prodigymb. Keep your midrange torque in check guys.

Also try to get a tune that allows you to monitor fuel and knock across the entire motor not just cylinder 1 among other things. It really isn't rocket science or brain surgery to keep an eye on these things and we teach all our customers how to monitor and periodically log if they so desire.

I'm getting mixed signals with injectors, the pro's are saying that it's fine to stay with the stock injectors - I'm never going to be running anything other than 94 Octane, so I think it should be ok(?).

However... this install may have stalled...

I took my car in to diagnose an od clunk/clang that has been bothering me for about a year, and it has been progressively getting worse. It's to the point that now it doesn't mysteriously disappear when I take it to the service shop to have it diagnosed.

The plan was to get that fixed, then install all the VTG/IC goodies, get a tune and by the weekend pick the car up, and be ready to rip some asphalt.

Everything however has ground to a halt.
As it turns out, the noise is coming from the front diff, which now needs to be replaced Cost of a new Diff $8500 Canadian. Found some cheap ones for 5300 US.
I'm left scrambling trying to find a used one, as the above prices are just plain absurd!
If any one has any ideas, or parts, or other alternatives, please drop me a line (link below to the thread, or PM).

"end of the week" I was hoping for cherry pie, and instead I was delivered a swift kick to the *****!
