3 Bar map sensor - orientation is wrong, how to install?

On the 997.2 Turbo S there are 2 MAP sensors, one pre throttle body and one post the throttle body on one side of the intake manifold. I bought two 3 bar Bosch MAP sensors from my tuner which I believe is the same ones that Cobb sells. The two 3 bar ones are identical.

The OEM and 3bar sensor on the pre-TB side is shaped exactly the same, with the little 90 degree bend.

However, the post TB one is different. See below pic. The blue is the new 3bar sensor, and the OEM 2.5bar one. Notice the shape and orientation. The OEM is a long 180 degree sensor, while the 3bar has a 90 degree bend.

If you lined up the screw holes, the orientation of the female end of the plug would switch sides and thus NOT allowing the engine/ECU wiring harness to reach the female end of the plug. It's physically impossible. The only way I would think is to cut open the wiring harness and somehow try to pull that wire out longer.

Questions:
1) Are all 3bar map sensors oriented this way? i.e can I find a 3bar map sensor that is shaped like the OEM one?
2) If you have installed this 90 degree one post the TB, how did you get it to plug in?

This is seriously a PITA. I really don't want to cut open my main wiring harness.

mfawaz is infamous around these parts
I purchased my 997.2TT 3 MAP sensors from Dzenno at Protuningfreaks which were OEM drop in replacements. No modification necessary except for the software update for proper maps required. good luck

+1

We haven't had any reported fitment issues at all with the ones we use/carry so far.

There is a VIN-break in the 997.2 Turbo S models where some cars use the same sensor on the y-pipe and intake manifold, and other cars use a different sensor on the manifold. You'd need to check with your dealer by VIN number to see which sensor your car uses on the manifold.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. Tom/SRM is right - there is a VIN break. Annoying!!!

The later 997.2's will need an adapter.

That being said... does Bosch have a 3bar MAP sensor shaped the 180 degree way that is compatible with Cobb?

Not sure. We don't change those sensors so I'm not sure if there's a 3 bar available for the manifold sensor.

Ran into the same issue and my mechanic fabricated a bracket to allow for a proper fit. Was a PITA but it got the job done.

Any pictures at all of the bracket? Thanks a lot.

Now you have.... kind of.

I purchased that Cobb tuner and Bosch 3 bar sensors that you sold Dmac about a year and a half ago for his 2011 TTS and the dealer just had the same problem today with the fitment that was reported above on my 2012 TTS during the installation.

The strange part was that I had read this thread earlier and I had called the dealer yesterday to warn them that there was a potential issue and asked them to check the parts catalog to ensure that the same OEM parts were shown for Dmac's car and mine (the same dealer services both of our cars.)

They did, and they said that the parts catalog showed the same Porsche part numbers for the MAP sensors for both of our cars, however obviously this isn't the case. They're searching now for an adapter or for an alternate 3 bar sensor (a straight one.)

If you find an adapter please do let us all know. Thanks!

I will. The dealer is looking now. I told him to just get a new 3 bar sensor if he had to. I'm assuming they make one in the other form factor. We'll see....

Problem solved. As Changster pointed out with his picture in the first post the problem is that Porsche used a different intake manifold MAP sensor (actually it's a TMAP sensor) on some cars and not on others. According to my dealer's service department they can't tell accurately from looking at the parts catalog for your particular year which one you have.

Based on their search and mine, all of the 3 bar sensors for our cars on the market are the 90 degree type. The problem this presents is that if the 90 degree sensor is installed in a car that had a straight sensor installed from the factory, the wiring harness won't reach new connector location.

This leaves us with only 2 solutions..... custom make a bracket so the sensor's connector is in the same location as it was originally, or extend the wiring.

The easiest solution by far is to extend the wiring with a male / female plug-n-play harness. After a lot of searching I found one that works perfectly. It's shown below. You can purchase it here, and it's about $40 USD + shipping. They're called "Bosch BSK Connector Extensions" and they're not shown as being made specifically for our cars, but they work perfectly.
