Nate Tempest is infamous around these parts
Aftermarket hydraulic or magnetic door struts possible?

Like most cars, the 997 has notched struts designed to hold its doors open at set angles. (Approximately, 1/3, 2/3, and fully open.) I've also seen these called 'door stays', 'door holds', 'door detents', etc. Here's one in my car:

The problem I've found in my short time with the car, and I'm sure many of you have also, is that the first notch is too close to be able to get in or out of the car, and the second notch will often be beyond the car beside you in a parking lot. So I'm left trying to reach back to hold then end of the door and make sure it doesn't smash the next car, while contorting myself out of the seat. (I'm not tall, and like a nice upright/forward driving position, so it really is a contortion.)

Now, apparently Porsche is planning someday to get rid of these old school notches and replace them with a fancy magnetic system: http://www.autoblog.com/2016/10/12/p...-door-dampers/

What I found more interesting about that post though was that it mentions some current models use a hydraulic strut to hold the door open at an arbitrary angle. The downside is that the door requires more force to move, but I'd gladly take that tradeoff. So what I'm now wondering is... could a small hydraulic strut be fashioned that could be swapped in for the existing mechanical piece? Because that would jump to the top of my mod list.

Edit: So this is the part I'd want to replace: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg2.htm#item7

Would need something like this to fit in its place: http://www.stabilus.com/products/non...ve/inter-stop/
Or as described here... http://dev3.multimatic.com/industry-...r-check-idc-2/
