Is the Metzger reputation overrated?
650-700whp is a nice sweet spot for usable power on the street + occasional track work. I didn't think about turbo technology advancing to hit torque in lower rpms. Glad I started this thread to learn more!
I thought that some Chevy LS motors, Viper, Supra, and heck even the S2000 motor all seem to be ok with pushing beyond the 50% over stock power on stock internals. But that's my opinion and not actually pulling research out for specific figures

I hate to twist ******* here too, but yes i would have to agree the 997.1 Turbo Mezger engine is over-rated. I've seen stock bottom end Honda 4 cylinder engines pump out more than 650 horsepower, only mod to compression was double stacked headgaskets or thicker aftermarket head gasket. But lets delete this thread after a week so we don't impact our resale values...

you can tune anything to last 1 run/day/week/year. ive seen multiple 1000hp 4bangers that run and drive like crap and blow up every week too.
Stock Mezger is good for 8XXwhp safely, as long as you have the right tune, turbos, and supporting mods. Most people that blow them up either run to small of turbos VTG/Gt28's and make to much down low TQ or don't run good gas on high boost. If you build it right then it will last.

The Mezger motor has a crank journal and bearing around each individual rod on the shaft, that is what makes it strong. Many engines have two rods per. The rods themselves are just OK at best.
AMS and Cobb did a test on the con rods of the Mezger and the DFI awhile back...

I don't think the Mezger is totally overrated because the power it does make it still pretty impressive on stock internals. However I'm with the numerous people on this thread that the 1,xxx HP isn't for me and isn't characteristic of a Porsche. It's actually a very very small amount of Porsche owners who actually want that. Yes, it's available because the engine has been around forever and thoroughly researched and developed. Those bragging about its ability to make 1,xxx HP have to realize to attain those numbers, a lot of the Mezger parts have to be removed anyways.
That's there some of the hype lies..

I own 2 built Mezger engines for years, 993 and 997TT. (600 and 1000hp)
The Mezger is THE reason I love Porsche; I'm not a "Porschist", but a "Mezgerist"!
I had a few BMW M, close friends run Italian V8, V12, built GTR...
I believe nothing on the market worth the Mezger when you are beyond the bolt ons (and the winner with bolt ons is the brother 997.2 DFI...).
A built Mezger allows you with reliability a level of torque and power you can't imagine if you never lived it. No dynosheets or glory runs but repetable performance.
I would even say reaching this level is almost "easy" such the basis is great, and we also have the chance the rest of the platform holds as well. (A 997 stock chassis holds fine at least 800hp without becoming dangerous)
No overrated imho!
