Failed fuel pump....

Hello...I just wanted to get a feel for when we should consider changing out the fuel pump on our cars. Is this a forever part or does this perform less as time, age and miles add up?
Anyone had a failure on a 997.1 yet?

I guess no one has had a failed pump? That's good to know.

Thanks Sam. I was just wondering if it best to just get it changed out since we will be tuning E85 and since available everywhere I will prob run that tune more often than not.

Think its somewhere in the $1k range for pumps and pick ups(jets). I have thought of swapping mine out if I try to squeeze more power out in the future just as a precaution. Then I could take advantage and flow test them

I do believe it is a "forever" item unless you experience an issue. In my case, I did have a failing fuel pump but it wasn't readily apparent (no CEL but there was a stored fault) that it was happening. I guess this is a benefit of the dual setup!

I actually bought the car with the pump on the fritz and continued to drive it for ~5K miles and a couple years before realizing I needed to address it. Not wanting to get stranded down the road, I went ahead and replaced the unit. Couldn't really tell any difference after it was replaced either. Take a look at the thread I started a couple years ago. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...elay-fuse.html for more info.

As an aside, I was originally quoted ~$1100 to have the fuel pump replaced (parts and labor). I ended up sourcing the parts (fuel pump was $388, sealing ring <$10, shipping $100) from Scuderia Car Parts across the pond. Although I was considering R&R myself, I ended up using my local Porsche Indy and they charged $350 in labor, so I saved a reasonable amount going this route.

Part numbers for reference:
Fuel pump: 99762012700
Sealing ring: 99720173300

I just replaced mine at 55kms. I had inconsistent pressure at low rpm only.

Can anyone share symptoms? I think I may have a problem with the pumps or relays.

fuel pressure drops, hard to start when car is hot, long cranking at startup.

No real symptoms on my end other than a burned out fuse that would blow every time I replace it. And oh yeah, it showed as a fault if you do a scan.

when fuel pumps are on their way out they draw more amps due to more internal resistance, which is why they keep kicking fuses

I don't know but after catching the car "red handed" in the act last night via a log...I am convinced something is off with my fuel supply to the engine. To give context, this was after a 30-40min spirited run after which I got home...parked and went inside for about 10mins. I go back to take a log of it at idle and boom.....car started right up....but short term fuel trim was pinned at 1.25 and there was clicking coming from the left side of the dash. I let it sit idling for a min or two and then rev'd up to 2500-3k rpm...after which I let it go and went back to idle. Clicking stops and fuel trims start going back to normal...

Looking at the log you will notice:

Idle Pre Revs:

RPM: around 750rpm
maf g/s: 5.75 to 6.0 range
map sensor: -9.5psi
throttle angle: 1.5-1.96 degrees
STFT: 1.25
Injection time ms: starts at .80ms and levels down to .68ms

Idle Post Revs:

RPM: around 750rpm
maf g/s: 5.75 to 6.0 range
map sensor: -9.5psi
throttle angle: 1.5-1.96 degrees
STFT: shoots back to 1.20 but then continuously decays to .95-1.0 (normal)
Injection time ms: shoots back to .80ms and levels down to .46ms

Nothing really changed with the car....a vacuum leak wasn't there and then magically disappeared post revs (unless I am missing something)

Only thing that could change (that isn't logged) is fuel amount being delivered to the injectors right?

Anyone have any thoughts?

clicking sound from left side of the dash would be the fuel pump relay. they are down in the drive kick panel. there is 1 for each pump.

Are the relays there or the fuses? I just looked at service manual and it has a crazy procedure to pull out relay carrier 1 from out under the dash. Do you know a shortcut?

both relays and fuses are there. you can pull out the relays separately. you have to remove some of the trim pieces around them to access them.
