Pretty simple. Many "Porsche" guys are not necessarily car brand enthusiasts but people that are purchasing the car for its prestige and potential future value. If anybody hangs around/follow Porsche threads for a bit, they will inevitably be exposed to the "Over-revs" term. Either right or wrong, over-revs are a measurable way to assess the vehicle's engine health. And "word of mouth" has established that readings at Range 4 or higher are direct indications of some level of owner abuse. Hate to say it but in a perfectly stock vehicle, this may have some level substance. Unfortunately, Even a simple thing like a tune or a lightened flywheel are leading indications that an owner intended to drive the car beyond the designed manufacturer specifications(otherwise, why do it?). That to me is not an issue, but for people considering having the vehicle for some time and later selling it with potential profit in mind will not look at the car due to the risk involved.

And don't get me wrong, for a true Enthusiast/Car Guy that intends to keep the car fully enjoy it in (his/her) own terms, this is not an issue. Like previously mentioned, as long as an engine health check is made that should be enough.

Good luck.

Agreed but even buying cars that are 2-4x the price of a 996/997 don't have these issues or concerns. Its not even something thats mentioned when buying a 6 speed lamborghini or ferrari or viper for that matter. Its just mind-boggling that forum fingers live and die by DME reports.

Not sure if your car has a PDK, but if it does its a moot point. From Porsche: *** Porsche dealers are advised by the manufacturer to disregard over rev data on all PDK and Tiptronic transmission cars when assessing a car for warranty provision. Consequently a PDK / Tiptronic vehicle with activity recorded as high as Range 6, assuming all other mechanical checks are passed, will be applicable for warranty***

Hey johnnysegel,

I searched litle around internet and found some info about the sensor on the flywheel. The distance to the tooth is incorrect.
Do you happen to still have the link/site where you found that information about the sensor? I've been looking myself, and haven't been able to find anything all that informative about it.

Thanks.

Just came back to this thread - I'm the OP - thanks posting that video. Most lucid, balanced discussion of this topic I've ever had or seen. Again, thank you.

I just ran the report on my 997.1 Turbo (manual). I bought it with 13,800 miles. Previous owners who put the 1st 10k miles were snowbirds who only drove it during winters in AZ. This is the report I pulled. I think it’s nearly unfathomable to have these kind of readings given the history. I’ve put 1,000 miles on it since purchase and absolutely no over-revs.
Just changed all the gearbox fluids and no leaks. Very clean under the car (not shiny). Car runs as expected.
