E85 Conversion

Hello, I am new to the Porsche world coming from owning lots of Mustangs and a Viper, all supercharged or turbocharged and high horsepower. I just acquired a 2008 997 Turbo 6 speed nicely modified to 590 awhp. I would like to switch to E85 and Xona 1000 turbos, but don't see much info on e85 options. ID injectors are easy, but has noone modified the factory fuel hat or any easy options on pumps besides spending 3500 for a dual kit, seems like there should be an easier solution with so many aftermarket pumps now available cheap. Thanks in advance.

Contact Sam at By Design. He will inform and set you up with as much detail you need on E85 options.

The stock fuel system on e85 with ID1300 injectors and XR1000 turbos is good for 850 wheel HP. If your goals are much above that range, you’ll need to upgrade the fuel pumps. And indeed Sam at ByDesign can give more advice. I’m happy with 850 wheel HP on my XR1000 set up, but It’s certainly capable of more with a more robust fueling system.

Basically all you need to do is raise base fuel pressure. Beyond that, you'll be into power ranges where you have to build the engine.

Wow, thats the exact setup Im going for Xona 1000 turbos and e85, I cant believe the stock pumps can handle that!

lol.
I thought that power level and tq level was too much for stock engine? I've got that setup on pumpgas and I'm pussyfooting around 22ish psi. Going to hit the dyno at some point to make
more informed decisions about the boost curve...

Bogg- you are always full of wisdom. That is a very good point. OP- I don’t think your rods will last long at 850 wheel HP. My motor is a built 3.8l with Carillo rods, EVOMS head studs, etc. That being said, my motor is pretty whimpy compared to Rix!

But indeed your fuel system won’t be the limiting factor in HP/Tq in a non built motor running e85..... your rods are probably the limiting factor. I didn’t upgrade the fuel system in my build because I was pretty happy with the power levels we were achieving and I felt more power than that would lead to other issues such as transmission failures, etc.

I think that overall the Xonas on pump gas will stress the stock motor to near its limits. My set up made right at 700/700 wheel hp and torque on straight 91 crappy CA pump gas. My daily driving set up is is 91 pump with methanol injection for 750/750 wheel hp/tq. Without a built motor, you may find that throwing on 65 or 68 mm VTG’s and running e85 will put you easily at 700 wheel HP.... probably nearing the stock rod limit- and is a whole lot cheaper and easier than doing Xonas.

Good luck in your project- if you end up doing the conversion to e85 and/or Xonas, keep us posted!!

And one more quick thought to consider- these cars put power down very efficiently. I previously owned an 09 GT500 that made 730 wheel hp and an 09 Z06 With cams, heads, exhaust, etc. My 997tt with 68mm VTG’s on pump gas (before I built it and did Xonas) killed both of these cars on freeway rolls using racelogic data..... By measurable margins. My old set up also killed my brothers Supercharged coyote mustang. On e85, then the kill margins would have been even higher. Of course my new set up with the Xonas is a further step up again.

In summary- the 911 turbo is a very formidable machine especially when breathed on a bit. It punches hard for the level of power it makes.

Oh awesome- if you are doing rods and head studs, then absolutely do the Xonas and e85! You’ll be very happy. BTW- I did the Todd K.’s dual disk clutch set up too - love it.

I got all my components from ByDesign (Sam). He’s awesome. He did my whole conversion and tuning, etc. I’m running Tial Q50’s welded directly onto my AMS intercoolers.

I’ll post a link to my build for further details.

100% accurate. My brother and I did 3 street car takeover events last year. Roll racing140 mph class. Gt500/zl1/hellcat/coyote needed 850whp just to be near our cars. We had e85 and 63.5s putting down 700/700 and did very well. Took down a lot of cars. 1000hp vengeance racing auto zl1 couldn’t keep up. 850whp terminator no match. These cars punch well above their power numbers for sure. Consistently top 2-5 cars every event. Both 6sp cars.

Great to see more data points. Thanks for sharing.
