I would have to agree with Arling, DMin and others above after owning my 550 for a few months now. There are way too many electronics between the driver and car. Overall their new cars are very disappointing.

i don't hate it as much i thought i would be & sometimes if quite fun when i'm in the good mood. and the 4 door M5 at least give me a reason to own it. but compare M6 to 997TT is such a no brainer because if i want a true sports car i'd take the Porsche any day.

I currently own a BMW 650i. I have owned many many BMW's over the past few years and I love them for the compromise between sport and practicality. Comparing the M6 to the 997tt is like comparing apples to oranges...If I wanted a GT car, with a large usable trunk, comfortable ride, and lots of luxury content, I'd get the M6, however, if I wanted a true sports car, 997TT all the way... For me the choice is easy I want a sports car, so 997TT all the way..

If the 997TT drives like the 996TT out of the box, I'd classify it as a GT. And, if I was shopping for a GT, the M6 would win out over the 997TT.

Quote: The M6 will be nice, but the 997 turbo will be in a different league interms of exclusivity...A porsche is a porsche and Bmw is a bmw, if you know what I mean!
Well, that used to be the case. Porsche lost the exclusivity case years ago. If you want exclusivity, it won't be a Porsche, with the exception of the GT2/3 or CGT. I don't have the numbers, but I would not be surprised at all if Porsche produces many more 997 Turbos than BMW produces M6's.

Well, clearly a lot of conflicting opinions on this subject! I think I'm in a pretty good position to give a subjective view on this as I currently have an M5, M6 and a 997 C2. They are all VERY different cars... Before I answer the original question I'm going to go off-track slightly and compare all three.

Starting with the M5 first of all, it is a truly amazing car. BMW have done an incredible job creating a luxury family saloon that willl give a 360 a run for its money. The performance is unbelievable and, to be honest, I have never experienced the problem with low end torque that a few people have mentioned in this thread. However, and I know I will probably be ex-communicated from the M5 board for this (sorry Gustav!) it is not in the same league as an M6 or a 911 when it comes to outright performance, feel and handling. My M5 has been sitting around in my garage in London for the past few months while I ran around in the M6. I took my M6 back to Glasgow last week so I have been using my M5 in London and it is just not the same. It doesn't have the feel or the sharpness of the M6 and, to be honest, it is just a little bit too easy to drive. In a straight line it will just laugh at the 911, but across a twisty country road, alhough it would be hard to separate them, the 911 driver would be having more fun.

The M6, on the other hand, is pin sharp and accurate and really has the feel of a pukka sports car. It does understeer under hard cornering, but that is easily fixed with a dab of the throttle and a flick of the steering wheel. However, it takes a talented hand to get the most out of it. Treat it without respect and you'll be rewarded with a one way ticket into the nearest field! The real downside with it, though, and where it loses out to the Porsche, is in the wet. 507 horses fed through the back wheels do not make for good traction. In the dry you will really struggle to unstick it, but conversely, in the wet you will struggle for grip anywhere beyond half throttle.

Put the M6 back to back with the 911 and the difference is obvious the second you sit in them. In terms of build quality the M6 is on a different planet. I'm not disputing the legendary quality and reliability of the Porker. I have owned many of them, ran them around a track all day, driven home and then driven them on a night out without a second thought, something I'm not convinced the BMW would stand up to so well. However, the cabin in the M6 just feels much more expensive. It really exudes quality and, while the 997 is a huge step forward over the 996, it just can't compete. I also love the gadgets in the BMW, although there a lot of niggly problems and technical glitches that should have been resolved prior to production.

On the road the story is the same. The BMW feels more solid and is considerably faster in a straight line than the Porsche and, in fact, than a 996 TT. The same could be said of any A road or motorway, but throw some twisty corners into the mix and they would be fairly well matched, at least in the dry. Top marks for feel, though, go to the Porsche. It always feels like it digs in just a little bit harder than the M6 and provides a whole lot more feedback.

Anyway, it's almost midnight and I'm going to bed as I have to work tomorrow, so to sum up... Of the three, I would place the M5 third. WHile it is a hugely capable car it is just not quite as good to drive as the M6 or the 911. Mind you, it is, quite definitely, the only one you would ever have any chance of getting lucky in the back seat of!!

Of the other two, I would take the M6 over the 911. Yes, the 911 provides more feedback and is almost certainly more fun across a really twisty road, but it just can't compete with the M6 on quality or sheer pace cross country on the kind of roadsI spend most of my time on. However, the original question put the M6 against the 997 TT - Take the speed of a standard 911, add 50% more power and the extra traction that 4 wheel drive will offer and it is definitely a winning package. Would I swap my M6 for one? Hell, yes, but fortunately I don't have to. I'm a brat so I'm having both!

In my opinion the M6 looks just wrong. It is like a catfish that just left a fight... I am a BMW enthusiast and had an M3 and M5 in the past but the new designs just don't do it for me. The interior is horrible as well. Like if it was made of concrete. As far as performance is concerned, it is not the lightest car out there either.

I really love the V10, the sound and the power. My father in law has an E60 M5 and I ve had the chance to drive it a couple of times. Indeed low end torque isn't that great but they couldn't do otherwise to preserve daily drivability I think. I really hate the transmission. I think 7 gears are an overkill and I really don't like the way SMG shifts. It is fast but not very smooth and doesn't offer the overall control a 6MT gearbox has. At the end of the day what is the point? Being the fastest or enjoying it the most?

Having said all the above I would pick the 997Turbo. I think it's styling is controversial as well but nowhere close that hideous styling of the M6. I wouldn't want to be seen in the M6 while the 997 comes close to the original concept of the 911. I have yet to drive an 997Turbo but the 996 was probably the best all around coupe ever made. You could travel around Europe with it, throw it in the track and enjoy it 365 days a year. I can imagine the 997Turbo only being better so for the money it would be my choise.

What answer do you think you're going to get when you post this question on a Porsche board??????

The only person who can decide is you. Drive them both and see which one you like better.

I would agree that the M6 is better looking . As far as performance goes, based on raw performance numbers the 997tt will out perform the M6. However, it won't be by leaps and bounds. For a blended need, street driving which includes open and urban roads, along with the comfort factor, the M6 will be better. In wet weather the all wheel drive would be good to have, but I'm in S. Cal. so that doesn't really matter to me. On the track, the 997tt and the M6 are not the cars you would really want anyway.

For a $100k plus I'd rather have the exclusivity of the M6. If history is any judge, the 997tt will be all over just like the 996tt and that sucks.
