San Jose CA Tire Choices
San Jose CA Tire Choices
I live in FL right now, but may be making a road trip up to San Jose, CA in the next few weeks in my 2008 911 Turbo Cab. Yes, I am aware of the COVID travel restrictions in Santa Clara county right now, sigh.
Anyway, I don't have to worry too much about tire choices here in FL (max performance summer tires are fine as long as they have great hydroplaning resistance), but I saw that the temperatures there get into the 30's at night. Yikes! Now I am a bit worried about driving my car since there doesn't seem to be any alternative tire except for Pirelli winter tires for those temperatures. What do those of you that live there year-round do about that? Just go with the summer tires, or switch between summer and winter tires at the appropriate times of year?

Yeah, those are the tires that are going on my car next week. I am more concerned with how they behave when temperatures get below 40F since they don't recommend them being used below 45F.
I live in central CA, It’s colder here in the winter than in San Jose. I run PS4S year round on my 997tt. They are great. I’ve never had and traction issues in the cold during daily driving. For that matter, they also seem to hook up fine during 60-130 runs when it’s cold.
No worries.... have a fun trip and enjoy the car!
You’ll find that it pulls hard in the early mornings if it’s in the 30’s and relatively low humidity. And to clarify- I daily drive my 997tt.... my favorite time to drive is going in to work early at 530 when it’s in the high 20’s and no one else is on the road 😁.
Drive safe... that’s a long journey!

Worry more about what you have to drive through to get here than after you arrive. It will get a lot colder in the interior desert than CA, and you’ll still have to over the Rockies even going the southern route. And going over the Grapevine can be a problem if you pick a bad day. Other than that as said above, Summer tires are fine here year around.
