that one of my tires is rubbed off and you can't see the logo. I called the shop and the shop says that I rubbed it against something and i damaged it. I told them that I drove straight from the shop to home and haven't driven the car since then.
And if i damaged it, how come my rim is not damaged. I am very careful driving and never had any curb rash or rubbing on my car. Just replaced the tires and this one that is rubbed off was on a backorder from michellin for 10 days.
I talked to someone that knows about tires and says that this tire could have been damaged during shipment (fed ex conveyer belt). The shop doesn't want to take the blame and they say that i did this to the tire.
How could you possibly do that much damage to the tire without damaging the rim? My guess is the tire was delivered to the shop in that condition or it happened during mounting the tire. I tend to doubt that it was delivered in that condition because a shop normally would notice it and wouldn’t mount it because they know the customer will notice it and blame them. If it was delivered in that condition they should never have mounted it. I would insist on replacement.
Have you checked the lip inside of your fenderwell? I had similar but much smaller issue before I rolled my inner fenderwell. Any damage on the other side?
Before I saw the pics, I assumed you had rubbing from lowering... but then I saw it's the outside sidewall! It's almost like it was filleted. I could see a conveyor belt abrading that. I can't imagine how you would've done that without damaging the wheel too. The tire had to be like that before install or during. Either way, I wouldn't trust that sidewall anymore and insist the shop replace it.
That is wild. Is this a small shop? Thats why I like to use the bigger shops in case stuff like this happens. I'd call Micheline.. tell them who you bought it through and see how they advise you. I'm sure you will get it resolved.. let us know. Crazy..
Thanks guys for your input. There is no rubbing on the fender well since this is wide fender by Techart. The other side is ok. All 3 tires are ok. This 4th tire (rear driver) is the tire that was back ordered and delayed in shipment. I had to wait all day at tire shop since Fed Ex said out for delivery. They never showed up which I ended up driving the car home with a used tire on the 4th wheel. Next day the tire showed up, they mounted it I drove it straight home. This is a big shop in Newport Beach called Grand Prix Performance.
They should contact Michelin or whoever bought the tires and get it covered under warranty.
How is it possible you ran over something without those little nibs right below the scallop shaving not be cut up?
I seen all kinds of tire damage over my 40 years of driving and I have never seen something like that caused by driving on a tire. Those cuts are too smooth and scalloped to have been caused by a curb or almost anything else that might have contacted it by driving. The rubber should be shredded not smoothly shaven down. Even the shape of the cuts tells you the tires or item that caused the cuts were moving against each cut, with one overlapping the other at a different angle. How would you have done that?
This is either a shipping or manufacturer defect. The fact that you had to wait for that specific tire due to backorder tells you something as well.
That definitely loos like it sat on a conveyor for 10-15min, just burning away...what's most disappointing is that the rocket scientist that mounted it didn't
"notice".
I asked them for the DOT numbers.
he gave me all 4. The damaged tire is the rear driver.
I asked for the DOT number of the rear driver (which is scraped off) and he said it's the same as the rear passenger DOT.
Even though this tire took 10 days to arrive from Michelin, he tells me it's the same DOT number.
left front 4m1701kx2620
right front 4m1701kx3020
rear right
4mvr00ex3420
rear left (damaged one)
he says it's the same as rear right
I have called Micehlin and they gave me a case number and asked me to go back to the shop. They said if the shop can't help you, we will send you to another authorized dealer for 2nd inspection.
Michelin should help. Definitely take them up on their offer.
The original shop should have been able to identify this was not your driving, the scalloping and the juxtaposing directions of the cuts is not normal driving damage and unless you got out there with a cheese scraper or something, there is no way you caused it.
The DOT numbering is unexpected, based on the differing ship times, but maybe they got it from another supplier who took shipment from Michelin off the same batch.
I call BS on the DOT numbers being the same if tire came in by itself. Supply chains for tires are all over the place, so very unlikely for one rogue tire to have the same number as the other. About a year ago I was on the hunt for a pair of PS4S 325/30/19 and supposedly got the last two in the country. They shipped from different warehouses and had very different DOT numbers/dates.
I would move on from this shop and take Michelin up on their option for a second dealer. I'm sure tire shops have options to deal with tires that come in damaged. Not sure why it's so hard for them to claim for a replacement.
After opening a case with Michelin and taking the car to an authorized Michelin dealer (not the original tire shop), they looked up the order# on the receipt and told me that the 4th tire's DOT is from 2017. not 2020 based on what the original shop told me.
Right there that order number solved all this. This tire was from 2017 and they gave me the tire and how funny is that the DOT numbers are rubbed off.
I stopped by at the dealer this morning before going to a 2nd authorized Michelin dealer, and they kept telling me that the damage was done by me and they would not take the fault.
Michelin is investigating this and escalating to the higher department and they assured me that they are going to fix this problem some how.
Why in the world would they go to such lengths (grind off the dot number and lie about it) to get rid of 1 old tire? What, they are like $300. Unless they wanted the vehicle out of the shop and on it's way and found some grey market tire. Still, why?
You do the right thing and you have a customer, you do the wrong thing, you don't (or worse). Makes no sense.
Glad you were taken care of and maybe they get a hand slap or something.
Michelin supervisor called me 15 times today which they were all blocked due to the darn T-Mobile spam blocker marking the calls as spam and rejecting them. Finally they got hold of me and they told me that based on their decision and the Pep boys and BigO Tire opinion , they are ordering me a single tire which is in production as we speak at No Charge. I called the original tire people and told them that Michelin was able to look up the order number and find out that the specific tire on my car was a 2017 production and not a 2020. The DOT numbers that the shop told me is from a 2020 production is false. 2 Michelin supervisors are handling my case and I am happy at the moment but not very happy with the original tire shop and why they caused me so much headache. The tires are on a back order for 3 to 4 weeks. It tells me that they just wanted me out of the shop and got me that 2017 tire with the DOT numbers removed.
I am disputing the charge per Michelin advice.
