I will bet the 997 GT2 will be more in the 550 HP range. they need to make this car CRUSH and OBLITERATE EVERYTHING on the market today excluding the CGT and the likes of those supercars. I am sure that this car is going to be a monster either way especially if they make it as light or lighter than the last GT2. I cannot wait for this car.

Maybe Porsche should look into the Super Charging ideas as a way of pressing more power instead of the N/A 911. . . Just a thought.

I think that ultimately, with the displacement of the flat 6 limited to 4.0 ltrs, a v8 will prob be on the way. i dont have an clue how else they would do it. maybe a SC, that would be cool, but i think having another FI car would take away sales from the turbo because the FI Carrera will likely be a less expensive car. I think the Carrera will stay N/A.

I have no idea what Porsche will do to keep adding power to the Carrera. I don't see a V8 or a standard SC. *confused*

Good article, though. Thanks!

its weird because i dont think a v8 will fit, unless the significantly change the body to fit it. i also dont see it being a v8 either, but options are the iconic flat 6 will see its end somehow. i figure itll be more like the ferrari v8s, small displacement, a lot of hp, pretty much the same way the flat 6 is, but in v8 form instead. i dunno, i really wanna know what rabbit they are going to pull out of their hat with the new engine. gonna be FAST tho, thats what i know, and sound great!

Can't see a v8 behind the rear wheels. Too much weight. Will be interesting to see how Porsche evolves the rear engine when the displacement limits are reached.

Thanks for the article, very intersting. I can't wait to see what they next version of the CGT is. But as for the next engines in the 911, I think we'll be seeing the flat 6 atleast for another 10 years. By then who knows what advances may come in engine technology. I mean remember when Ford went from 5.0's to 4.6's? Everyone was sad until they realized they made more power and were more efficient. So don't be suprised to see the flat 6 for a very long time. But IF they do decide to go to a v8, the chevy small block has been put into older 911's for years, it's actually very similar in size AND weight contrary to belief. It's all the radiators, hoses and tubing that made them so much heavier than the air-cooled engines they were replacing. So if they chose to put a small v8 in, it could be done quite easily. But I'd love to see a flat-8 in the 911's because I love the sound of the boxer engine design, but it would probably be too big to add another cylinder to each bank, but imagine the sound of a 908 race car, now tame it a little with street legal mufflers...I can dream can't I.

A 997 GT2 with 550hp will be very close (if not passing) the CGT.

As for the limitations of the Flat-6 engine .. Porsch is pushing 415hp from a N/A 3.6 engine on the GT3; this engine is going to be with us for a long time.

Nice artice. Pretty exciting times for Porsche.

Just out of curiosity how much larger can they punch the flat 6 in terms of displacement?

Thanks
Tony

I read the highest displacement is 4.2 liters...going upper with it, they would need to use even lighter materials to save weight and strenght, and for that reason, increase the costs.

They don't need to increase output, what they need to do is take away weight!!!!

Imagine 483 HP twin turbo, weighing 2800lbs like an old 911 did. Titanium, carbon fiber etc, are the future for increased performance. Look at what lotus has done.

The currrent 'vette C06 engine weighs about a hundred pounds less than a current m97 3.8l flat six. Wt isn't the issue, probably overall size( lateral/superior demensions) making the fit very snug in the current 997 varient of the 911.

Amen.

I'd like to see the 928 come back (and be successful, this time around), and take the GT side, so the 911 remains the hardcore Porsche, and we can do away with sunroofs, cupholders, extended leather and other luxury items. A 2200lbs/360hp base Carrera ... I'd dig that!
