It kind of defeats the purpose. I'm sure that a big part of the reason people order the option from the factory is that it is under warranty from Porsche if something goes wrong. Unless the dealer gives you a dealer honored warranty, it is not covered. Might as well just get it aftermarket and save hundreds of $.

Actually if you did get the Porsche SSK from the dealership and have it installed by them then it gets full factory warranty coverage as far as I know.

Yes, that is my understanding too. I had the dealer install a SSK on my 997S. Where did you come by the $750 price?

That's how much the SSK was when I ordered it from the factory. $750. I remember asking the dealership how much it would be if someone were to get the SSK from them; parts + labor should be around $750 so it's about the same either way, except that it's not possible to get it from the factory anymore. I ordered mine just before they discontinued this factory option.

Not really, there was a thread a yr or so ago about an internal memo from PAG about aftermarket shifters voiding warranties, the oem version whether dealer or self installed is 'immune'. The price delta btwn a oem ssk (from the right source) and a BM is about a hundred dollars. It would be nuts to pay 750 for the shifter if you can get the same thing from another dealer for 350 and install it yourself in an hr, but hey, it's only money

FYI
The 996 and 997 shift consoles are interchangeable...Porsche superseded the 99642498300 (996 OEM SSK console) to 99742498300 (997 OEM SSK console)

Question for you. Since the B&M is only the lever and the SSK from the porsche parts dept is the entire housing, does one make more sense than the other? Meaning, why would I need the entire housing, or is it beneficial. I've also heard that the SSK from porsche uses B&M so it's the same product.

You'd retain warranty if you were to go with the Porsche OEM SSK. It's also a direct swap too. I seem to recall some modification being necessary with the B&M version. I'm not 100% positive on that though so don't hold me to that.

Both units are manufactured by B&M. Most of the plastic components are replaced with metal in the B&M as compared to the stock Porsche SSK. Installation is fairly straight forward however if you have not done this before be careful as it is hard to find all of the attaching points. We do have the B&M SSK in stock.

Really? That I didn't know. What's the benefit of going with all metal instead of plastic parts?

There are a lot of pictures of the factory unit and aftermarket unit here. http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf

The metal components give the shifter a much crisper feel.
