Since you're obviously into photography, you might try out the (relatively) new PhotoShop High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode and exposure bracket at -6, -3, 0, +3, +6, then you can apply your grad filter on the computer and still not blow out your highlights or lose your shadows.
Obviously requires a tripod, which I asume you were using anyway.
