Smoking how often

I know turbos are prone to smoke at start-up. Mine seems to do this about once every 10 to 15 start-ups. Sharkey/Stephen is this normal? I have Fabspeed exhaust with EVO headers, but my car did this before the mods. No problems otherwise, oil comsumption low (less 2 qts with 4K miles), no engine lights.

TIA,

Mike

Good question. I've seen this asked before and the general consensus is that it's normal. Mine does it as well, about every 5 to 10 starts, depending on when I last drove the car. I think you also have a short trip to work, like around 5 miles each way? Mine is about 10 miles, one way, and I always make sure the engine oil is at least 190 or so, or I keep driving. At least once a month I'll put about 100 miles into a nice senic drive.

Ever notice the oil temp when you get to the office?

Does this have anything to do with the amount of smoke?

Thanks FSU. Yes I have a short trip about 2~3 miles to work, oil never gets to 190C, maybe 140C. Like you I try and get out once a month or more often to let the engine wind out and get up to full temp.

BTW I really like the Fabspeed exhaust, the sound is intoxicating.

Chris...my drive is short and don't need to cool down, more of a warm up instead. If I do have a hard drive then I try and let the engine cool down some before parking.

I rarely do a cool down...I have had smoke only once in 3 months and it was recently. I have to say...it freaked me out but it hasn't happened again since.

My car smokes on almost every start up. Unfortunately its probably due to short runs and no cool down either. Cant beleive how much smoke it produces. Thankfully it only happens at my home and not on restart in town, that would be embarrasing. Hope its OK?
