how many people here have actually driven the R8?

not trying to be a smartass... but c'mon guys... if you don't like the R8 because of its looks, that's a perfectly fair point. but to slag it off as a proper driving tool/track weapon, without actually having ever driven one, seems a bit puerile to me

I hope that further tests of the 997TT/GT3 against the R8 (and even RS8) will show Porsche shining thru.

But until then, i'll at least reserve judgement until the proper jury is out.

right now we have some evidence that the new Audi is at the very least a car to be reckoned with...

Peace!

Also see Eclou post to put those 'times' into perspective.
I love the sound/engineering of the r8, the look is just a little femanine for me.
Wasn't that a Motortrend time?

7:40 is not a proven time, 7:42 was the time acheived by Rohl and I believe that one.

i have driven the r8 and i have driven a 997tt
the 997 tt has quite a bit more power and esp torque

the r8 is MUCH more nimble
meaning quicker turn in and exit

Agreed - everything I've read is that the R8 is a great driving car. I'm just not sold on the looks which is a HUGE consideration when you spend over $100K. If the R8 was a $75K car, I'd like it more and probably take it over a Z06. Performance is not always everything...

are you kidding me ?
how could the car possibly be 75k ?
its all alumium, 4.2 v8 fsi
Bang & Olufsen sound system
R-Tronic tranny

and just so you know , they are only making around 200-300 of these cars for the first year
the one that my odl audi store was allocated sold it for , i BELIEVE $50k+ over whatever the sticker will be

the person that baught the car is a buddy of mine and has a CGT, a GT2, a 599, murci and gallardo, among other cars ..
so he's def an enthusiast, and he can't wait

Well, you would have to compare that time with WR behind the wheel of the R8.

The fine thing with sport auto times is that they use the same driver and known conditions like temperature, etc. so you can compare cars and not drivers.

I hope you understand the difference.

I'll try to get my pea brain to process it, just don't use any big words.
I think that was the correlation I was trying to make, I still think with WR in either car you'll see better times.

I too think the 997TT will be faster than the R8 on Nürburgring, have never stated anything else.

My point was that the 996TT is only 1 second slower than the 997TT, same driver. I have no clue what time WR drove the 996TT.

But I never use times from the manufacturer, they can be interesting, but I prefer from an independent source. And comparing different cars with different drivers is more comparing drivers than anything.
I am sure WR is faster in a Boxster than me in a Enzo, but it doesn't make the Boxster faster.

I said "IF"... relax and don't be such a fanboy. I like Audis, too (I've owned 3).

Paying $50K over sticker for ANY car is stupid, especially so on an Audi/BMW/Mercedes.

I haven't doubted for a second that the car is a good one. I would lease one for 3-4 years. To me it's just not the sort of car one keeps forever. Styling is a subjective thing - I just don't find it that appealing.

If the car had a V10, I may overlook its hideous appearance. Car seems overpriced with the RS4 engine.

It's quite an improved RS4 engine with dry sump etc.

The chassis seems worth its price anyway
