Angry The right tool for the Job ?

Taken from the Ferrari Chat Forum :

People of money have more than one car - in fact, several. The streets of downtown LA are no place to take a Ferrari or Lambo. If you want to see sports cars, head out to Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway. You'll see LOTS Of them, there's room out there for performance cars to stretch their legs and use them for what they were intended for. I have seen a few sports cars on Rodeo or Sunset/Hollywood, but....its full of traffic, parking is scarce, and there are LOTS of idiots on cell phones who are NOT paying attention to where they're going at all (EVERYONE is self-important in LA, duh!)....would you go cruising in such a dangerous minefield with an IMPORTANT car? I didn't think so. You take your Bimmer, your P-car, or other disposable, yuppie-trash daily beater to go shopping or grab a latte.....if some teenager in a Range Rover that her daddy bought her decides to swap paint with you, you won't fall to pieces about it.

P car a disposable one ? Do not think so !! What the heck !!! <!-- / message -->

If a P-car is disposable, what is a Honda, Toyota, Etc? Also, I wonder what the author drives.

jkb is infamous around these parts
i think in this case disposable means: this car is reliable and can be used as a daily driver and hit 100K miles without any issues unlike some of the exotics

Hate to be the bearer of reality but P cars are not rare, exotic, or anything like that. It is a disposable car that many use as a daily driver, a duty not many would attempt with a ferrari or lambo.

C-GT may not exactly apply here.

I can't help but reply to this. Obviously just my opinions, but I've "studied" Porsche and it's history for quite a long time so I definitely do not agree with the above statements.

Rare - Not rare...Maybe not in major cities, but their production numbers pale in comparison to Toyota or Honda etc. Growing up in Santa Monica and having lived in Phoenix, Ft. Lauderdale and Cardiff By The Sea, I didn't think they were all too rare either. But then I drove across the country and also spent a few weeks in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. That is when I realized that outside of the major cities, P-cars are indeed about as rare as any Ferrari or Lambo. Simply put, they barely exist outside of major cities. I once went to visit a friend in Prescott Arizona, which isn't exactly a huge metropolis, but definitely a small enough city that 911's aren't a dime a dozen like they are out here in Los Angeles. I went and stopped at a fast food restaraunt and my little ole 1972 911 had people coming outside to gawk at my Porsh, it was very evident, they don't see many of P-cars out there.

Exotic - I guess it depends on what your definition of exotic is, but pretty much, Porsche is the only company that utilizes a rear engine rear wheel drive layout atleast to the extent of it's success in performance. Is that not exotic? They develop and are often the first company to bring new technology to use in the automobile industry, is that not exotic? Porsche uses of EXOTIC materials such as Titanium, Ceramic, Carbon Fiber and Magnesium in it's vehicles...well that kind of speaks for itself I would think.

Disposable - Yes, all those 1973 Carrera RS's in people's collections should just be thrown away (I think I'll need to do a little dumpster diving), don't bother restoring those, or a 1955 550 for that matter...or that 1959 Convertible D...eh, a mere knock off of the speedster, neither of which should have been built. Ok, ok, that wasn't fair, let's talk about modern cars. 996 or 997 GT3's, 996 and 997TT's have been built in large enough quantities to say they're not exactly one off specialty vehicles. Yet, they're still revered and sought after. Even "lesser" models over the years are highly prized (some people forget the 356 Speedster was an austere, cheaper car before it became the choice of road racers), so I'd hardly say they're disposable and run into the ground and then left for dead like many Nissan's, Chevy's and Ford's are.

Daily Driver's - We are very lucky to have an Automobile that is as reliable and civil that it could be used as a utility or tool for the daily grind. While at the very same time when uncorked can provide the largest of smiles and leave the Italian cars scampering for their pride. I'd say truly the best of both worlds in one package.
