Encounter with a Supra

It was 9:00 pm and a long straight with no traffic. I came up behind a red Supra with a big wing and blew by him in the right lane. The chase was on, we twice slowed down to about 100 kph and hit it to 240 kph and in the end he was constantly 3-4 car lenghts ahead of me.

Thumbs up both ways and off we went. No idea what was under his hood but it sure moved.

Have to respect those rice burners they can be amazing in a straight line.

My car is stock other than a Cargraphic TUV Sound muffler system. Supposed to have 505 HP

But ur car is stock right?
85% of Supra owners don't leave it stock.
I'd still go with a Porsche, 993TT even, no bias.
I love the Supra.

the 9 sec Supra

borrowed from another board - how to build a Porsche killer:
  • $25K for mid-mileage '94-'97 mkiv supra tt auto, in good shape (no salvage title)
  • 1000+hp-capable fuel system: $2,500 + $700 install
  • 1000+hp-capable turbo kit: $5k + $900 install
  • 150 wet shot direct port nitrous kit: $1500 + $1000 install
  • Upgraded 2jz-gte internals (eg. connecting rods & bearings) and headwork: $4K (parts) + $2k headwork + $3K uninstall, machine shop work, reinstall
  • Race Cams $1k, install included in previous bullet/item
  • 4-row fmic: $2K + $500 install
  • 4" exhaust: $1500 + $100 install
  • Full race intake plenum & TB: $2K + $1K install
  • Complete SP400 Tranny Swap kit (no overdrive): $5500 + $500 install
  • Carbon-fiber Driveshaft $2k
  • N/A Brake conversion: $1K + $300 install
  • Drag Coilovers: $2K + $400 install
  • Drag Rims&Tires (Full Race Slicks & 'Skinnies'): ~$3K
  • Standalone ecu & dli/cdi: $3K + $500 install + $2K tuning (yes, at least $2k for tuning)
  • Race Fuel: about $500/barrel
  • I'll let someone else do the math to figure a total...
those cars can be killers

good run. I usually assume a clean looking and running Supra to have about 600+ Hp

So basically just under 75K for a 9 second Supra including car purchase. How much does it cost to make a 9 second 996TT? I would guess if you purchase a good used 996TT for $60K, you're going to have to put atleast 60-75K additional to reach 9 seconds in the Qauarter mile. I know Markski has spent probably quite a bit more than that, maybe 6 figures? but now that his car has been built, I'm sure Protomotive can do it for much less since a lot of his costs were probably involved with research and development. Now he can duplicate what worked on Marks car and avoid the mistakes he made in the learning procsess. I could be way off on that however (Mark, we the community here, really do owe you and Todd a big thank you for going through the headaches associated with building your 9 second monster. Everyone is better for it and I'm sure you and your car contributed greatly in the progression of performance for these cars). All I know is at the end of the day, if you want to build a 9 second car on a "budget", you're best going with a lighter muscle car of the 60's or 70's such as either a Nova II, a '67-69 Camaro, a Maverick (YUCK) or Vega (DOUBLE YUCK!) that's been gutted out for weight savings and drop the craziest big block with the largest blower you can find and you'll still be in the range of $30-40k. All that being said, I'd much rather drive the stock $60,000 996TT than either the 9 second Supra or the Budget strip burner. Now I will admit, I wouldn't mind a 1970 LS6 Chevelle or 1970 Boss 302, they both have a soft spot in my heart, but still not over a 996TT, they would have to be in addition too rather than instead of.

I've owned multiple supras from 500rwhp to 1100rwhp+. All low mileage of course. They can't be compared to 911 Turbos, different breed of cars. If your looking for a reliable all out performer you can't beat a Supra. However they cannot provide the class act or looks of a Porsche 911 Turbo. You can't get leather on the dash, or an suede like headliner from the factory on the MKIV (only vinyl or felt). Sure a Supra can easily make any 911 Turbo look slow. However if I was driving the 911 Turbo I wouldn't even try racing a Supra for the sake of pride. lol, more than likely you will get whipped by it.

BTW, much respect to you to admit a lost.

Won't be a clean Supra for $40k with engine upgrades. It will be a high mileage one with the no name brand upgrades. Already costs around $40k+ to buy a clean low mileage Supra.

Slushboxes are for girls, you don't need 75 grand in a Supra to smoke damn near anything, and they do as much damage in the twisties as they do in a straight line. (Actually, the platform blows for drag racing).

Also, good luck finding one in "good shape" for 25k.

These days it's even money as to whether a given Supra is going to be fast and owned by someone who knows how to use it, or a riced out dog of a car on what's left of the stock engine.

why would you buy a low mileage supra to race? you'd be paranoid everytime you drove that thing because if you got hit, you'd be screwed out of all your money.. you can build a 93-95 70,000 mile 6 speed with brand name parts for under $40,000.. Most low mileage supras dont get driven, why would i build a 9 second car and not drive it?

heres a 9 second auto for sale... $27,500
http://supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447904

9 second 6speed... $36,000
http://supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447179

BPU 94 6 speed.. $18k
http://supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=437250

I'm pretty sure $22k left from the $18k bpu will be enough to cover a titan fuel kit, a boostlogic t74 kit, a tilton and an aem ecu with sensors

Supras from that generation are about 15 years old already. Are they still that reliable, even if it has relatively low miles? Reminds me of a video I saw of a boosted Eclipse trying to embarass an M3. The eclipse promptly shredded it's engine.
