can you explain in laymans terms the difference between this & the new silver edition

I'd be glad to, the silver edition records 1080p @30 frames/s while the black edition is capable of recording 1080p @60 frames/s (but will record up to 1440p @48 frames/s) and this will give you a much more fluid video.

This is because the silver is equipped with an 11MP camera which takes photos @10 frames/s vs the black editions 12MP camera capable of 30 f/s and much better low-light performance. The black edition also includes the WiFi remote which allows you use the GoPro App on your smart phone to remotely control the camera.
