HELP: AWE cat/muffler fitment issues
Well, I got a CEL today. 4 codes. All bank 2 sensor 1, which is the passenger side O2 sensor before the cat. Like I said in my first post on this thread, I truly believe the location of the bung of the O2 sensor is not correct. I replaced the ebay headers with x51 headers, and the fitment is fine now between the passenger side muffler and corresponding cat. BUT, the angle of the O2 sensor still seems funny, as it is angled downward and sits against the pipe going to the passenger side muffler, also causing the wire to the O2 sensor to be pulled too tight. We read the codes today and they are call coming from this O2 sensor. I will contact AWE in the morning and see what will be done about this. Hopefully they will acknowledge the problem as I think it may just be with the particular cat I have, and I also hope they will cover the O2 sensor if it needs to be replaced (probably will given there are 4 codes coming from it). Will post pics real soon in this thread...
I have had my AWE cats on for 3k miles and 4 mos. with no CEL light.
Dave
The O2 sensor did not get damaged during install. The CEL light went off after driving the car for a good 500+ miles with the AWE cats installed. I was very careful during the install and have done many exhaust installs before on my two M3s and also my turo Honda. The code has to do with O2 temp and readings. Here are the codes:
1. P0050 - Bank 2 sensor 1 heater circuit
2. P2A03 - O2 bank 2 sensor 1 range/performance
3. P0155 - Banks 2 sensor 1 heater circuit manfunction
4. P0050 - Bank 2 sensor 1 heater circuit
1. P0050 - Bank 2 sensor 1 heater circuit
2. P2A03 - O2 bank 2 sensor 1 range/performance
3. P0155 - Banks 2 sensor 1 heater circuit manfunction
4. P0050 - Bank 2 sensor 1 heater circuit
If you look at the pics, there is no way that the location of that O2 sensor bung can be correct. I mean it is angling down into the muffler pipe...there is so much more room for the O2 sensor above. Makes a lot more sense for the O2 sensor to be parallel to the ground/horizon instead of it being angling down into the pipe as is shown in the pic. Please tell me yours does not do the same thing in terms of its location/angle!
I have Fabspeed sport cats and no CEL's.
Jay,
Give me a few minutes to investigate what is going on here.
Glad to see that the X51 header install fixed your alignment issues in your first post, but there is still something strange here. As you can see from Topsd's post, that is how the O2 sensor *should* be sitting.
As far as the other O2 sensor codes you are seeing, I am afraid that Dave07997S may be right. The first O2 sensors are before the cats, so if they are throwing codes, either you have them installed in the wrong location (where the second O2 sensors should go) or they got damaged. Seeing the wires twisted like in the pictures you posted makes me nervous. You want to prevent that from happening during install.
I'll get back to this thread soon.

Jay,
I went back to the manufacturing department and my foreman and I played around with a set of our cats in stock.
We think you may have installed the driver side cat on the passenger side and the passenger side on the driver side.
It would be very hard to do this, but we think it would be possible. Very hard to tell without actually trying to do this on a car.
We ship all parts labeled with "driver side" and "passenger side" decals on them. Did you notice those decals? They will fall off after heating up the system.
Do you have any pictures of the other O2 sensors? They would be in a very awkward position, too, if the two sides were swapped during install. I cannot get enough information from your pictures to determine the rest of the cat sections' orientation.

Yeah, your pic does not look right. I have just got my fabspeed cats put on yesterday. They lined up perfect and no problem with cels or fitments. It def. looks like either they need to rotate upward or that you might have it on the wrong side and maybe forced them in there.

That's what I thought as well, I thought he had them reversed. I saw this post at about 1am last night with the photos and it looked whacked. Mine aren't even near touching a exhaust tube at all and looks like topspd's.
Dave
Hmm well unless you guys mislabeled the cats, I installed the driver's side one on the drivers side and the one labeled passenger side on the passenger side. When my friend and I were looking at it yesterday, it seemed that perhaps the cat labeled passenger side is in reality also a driver's side cat (they look identical if you were to imagine turning the driver's cat around to fit the passenger side, thus explaining the odd angle of the passenger side cat). Could it be possible that you packaged and sent (on accident) two driver's side cats? The cat on the driver's side does not have this problem btw. The O2 sensors seem to in the right spot on that side...not at any strange angles or wires being pulled tight. I imagine if I were to have the two switched around the O2 sensor placements on the driver's side would be ackward as well. My 997 is my daily driver and having these issues with the O2 sensor has been a PITA. Please be sure to post on here or call me on my cell (402)-850-7405 regarding this issue.
I will give that a try tonight after work. Wouldn't that affect the rest of the angles/fitment of the cat or would it truly just rotate the cat in the same plane?

WOW, Thats the same problem I'm having Bank 2.. Do me a favor and drive it for a week. Mine comes on for a few days and then goes off... very weird.. it has gone on and off about 8 times...on a week off a week...when its on the dealer says its the cat, but its after the cat they claim.
