HELP: AWE cat/muffler fitment issues

So i purchased AWE high flow cats and mufflers along with the suncoast/ebay headers. Install turned out to take a lot longer than I expected, though I did get it done. The quality of all the parts is top notch, but the cat on the passenger side just does not seem like it fits properly. First off, I think the bung for the O2 sensor (the one closer to the header) is not a the right spot because the O2 sensor is pulled down and the wire is tight as can be. The end of the sensor (where the wire leads out) touches the piping of the muffler on the same side! Because of this, the passenger side muffler and the cat it is attached to do not align well at all, causing the clamp that attaches the two to sit at a very odd angle and now allowing me to get the bolts to tighten the clamp in place (bolts not long enough). I will contact AWE first thing on Monday morning to see that the deal is. I do not see how I could have installed any of the parts wrong as they were all clearly marked as either driver side or passenger side. Any thoughts on this or has anyone else experienced a similar problem? This really sucks to have the night before a big p-car drive in the morning...

Are you sure those are 997 parts? I had the same problem on a couple of cars a while back. All it took was one wrong part and the puzzle doesn't fit together. One time it was the wrong part and the next time it was the wrong instuctions. I have the same headers and looking at AWE cats and mufflers. Good luck.

Did you unclip the 02 sensor from it's mount to give you more slack? Also, when installing the 02 sensor you are going to have to coil it up in the opposite direction so when you tighten it it won't be binding. Maybe I am not sure what you are talking about..can you take a pic and post it up. I installed my whole exhaust system on ramps in 3.5 hrs which included disassembly and reassembly.

I am going to take out the entire exhaust and try fitting the AWE stuff with the stock headers and see if that resolves the problem. Should I buy entirely new gaskets again or can I just use the new ones I put on with the ebay headers? If the problem is indeed the headers, JNE power better give a refund. btw, where is the best place to purchase the x51 headers from? If the problem is indeed the ebay headers, then I will likely go with the x51 headers...will keep you posted.

that would be my suggestion. Install the AWE system with the stock headers and I'm sure you will see that everything lines up perfectly.

The jigs that AWE use don't allow for misplaced O2 bungs.

The only problem I had was that the cats didn't fit close enough to the connecting pipe so the clamp is stretched as far as possible. about an inch is straight clamp.

Jonathan,
Do you happen to have x51 headers or can you get some to me by tomorrow or Wednesday latest?

ok so I ordered x51 headers from sunset and they are being overnighted to me. Hopefully there will be no fitment issues with the x51. Such a pain to have to do the entire install again, but def will be worth having perfect fitment hopefully.

I have the AWE cats/mufflers w/X51 headers and I had no problem with fitment other than a little bit of force to match up the cat to muffler pipes. I did release the O2 wires for extra length like Dave discussed but had no interference issues. I used new gaskets and header bolts as well.

Wow, not only do we both have SY 997's but we both have identical exhaust setups..

I've been wondering about their sports cats. I heard from a good source that all sports cats give off CEL's. AWE says theirs don't. Anybody else having CEL problems?

Well, I got a CEL today. 4 codes. All bank 2 sensor 1, which is the passenger side O2 sensor before the cat. Like I said in my first post on this thread, I truly believe the location of the bung of the O2 sensor is not correct. I replaced the ebay headers with x51 headers, and the fitment is fine now between the passenger side muffler and corresponding cat. BUT, the angle of the O2 sensor still seems funny, as it is angled downward and sits against the pipe going to the passenger side muffler, also causing the wire to the O2 sensor to be pulled too tight. We read the codes today and they are call coming from this O2 sensor. I will contact AWE in the morning and see what will be done about this. Hopefully they will acknowledge the problem as I think it may just be with the particular cat I have, and I also hope they will cover the O2 sensor if it needs to be replaced (probably will given there are 4 codes coming from it). Will post pics real soon in this thread...
