Noise level 997 vs 996

Hi All,

I previously owned a -03 996 C4S.

Great car, but one thing that was annoying me was the noise level in the cabin when going for longer drives. Dont get me wrong, the engine sound is great , but after a few hours I also wanted to enjoy the BOSE stereo. But in german highway speed this was almost impossible. (ps. car was running with the C4S stock wheels, 18 285/30 ZR 18, Pirelli if i remember right, and no PSE.)

This was one of the reasons I finally sold the car and got an Audi S5.

Now I'm investigating the possability to get back into a 997 (but non S).

Can anyone comment on noiselevel ? Is it less/more/same from 996 ? I assmume that the new design has not effected the noise level much.

IMO the 997 is a little less noisy but tires make a big difference. My RE050As
are less noisy than the PS2s were. Most tires seem to get more noisy when worn down as well.

I realize you're not interested in the s model, but my 2 cents: the 997s is pretty noisy esp. on the highway vis-a-vis an Audi. I drove an A6 (4.2) and it was super quiet. So, when I switched, the highway noise was really, really annoying. I got used to it after a while tho.

I had an 03 996 C2 and I thought it wasn't too loud. My 997 C2S was a little quieter until I added PSE. I think you might find the C2 without PSE to be a bit quieter.

I had a 2003 996 and now drive a 997S. The sound level of the engine and stock exhaust seems slightly louder in the 997S. The road noise from the tires, however, is noticeably lower in the 997S with the Pirellis.
