Very good idea. While the patient is open...

I thought about installing a short shifter, which adds about one hour of labor instead of the usual 2-3 hrs for install time according to the shop manager, however, I couldn't get a short shift kit in time before the job was completed.

It was $700 total for the entire tab, cables and labor to install.

The same thing happened to me just today...

I'm stuck in first gear, I can move it back and forth but not sideways... Luckily there was an open parking lot right there, I was able to park the car. I will get it towed today... The worst part is that this happened on a weekend while the dealerships are closed!

There does seem to be a design flaw with the shift cables :

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...37-post15.html

I asked my tech about it last time I was at the dealer and he says there is no TSB on the shift cables (!?).

What is a TSB if you don't mind me asking?

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

Normally if there's a known flaw with the car, PCNA releases a TSB which all the dealers see through PIWIS.

Thanks for all the data!

I wish Porsche would solve this problem... It really is a burden to get stuck in the middle of the road in first gear

Mine broke today on my way home and I got stuck in 3rd gear. I barely made it home in 3rd gear.

I can't even tow my car since it is in gear.

Should I upgrade to a short shifter? replace the cable? and upgrade the linkage?

FWIW, I too wondered about this but the guy was able to get it on the flatbed without me sitting in the car pressing the clutch in ....

Mine is a 2005 cs.

That's right, why didn't I thought of sitting inside the car to press the clutch.

The guy said he didn't have the dolly with him, if he had to pull the car up to the flat bad in gear, something will damage.

But again, he didn't suggest me to be inside the car to press the clutch and I didn't thought of it.

for what it`s worth - a lot of folks who track their car get those plastic shifter cable ends replaced with metal ones from cup car. cable never brakes - only its ends do.
but it is quite a PITA to get access down to that area to DIY.

BTW for the record this happened to me last month. It's pretty scary when you're driving along and suddenly the stick goes floppy, you move it around and there's obviously nothing connected to it.

My 3rd/4th cable broke, and I wasn't driving hard at all. IMO clearly one of those little stupid places where Porsche saved a couple of bucks and it's a weak point on the car.

Oh well, at least this repair is reasonably cheap. If I'd known about the cup car shifter ends I would've done that. Always a good idea to get the upgraded bits for this weak points when you can.
